2008 World University Cycling Championship
The 2008 World University Cycling Championship is the 5th Word University Cycling Championship sponsored by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). The championship took place in Nijmegen, Netherlands, from 21 to 25 May 2008. Prague and Bangkok were also candidate cities to organize the championship. The NOC*NSF chairman Erica Terpstra opened he World Championships at the opening ceremony on 21 May. Athletes from 25 countries competed in the disciplines mountain bike cross-country, mountain bike marathon, individual time trial and road bicycle racing, road race. It was the first time in student sports that there was held a World Championship Mountain Biking. Nijmegen

Evaldas Šiškevičius (born 30 December 1988) is a Lithuanian former professional road bicycle racer and mountain biker, who competed professionally from 2011 to 2022. He competed at the 2020 Olympic Games and had a top-ten finish at Paris-Roubaix in 2019. Career Born in Vilnius, Šiškevičius has competed as a professional since the start of the 2011 season, as the team he had been a member successfully became a Continental team. 2008 In Road Cycling
In 2008, for the first time in ten years, two Grand Tour (cycling), Grand Tours were won by one rider, the Spaniard Alberto Contador. Alessandro Ballan succeeded fellow Italian Paolo Bettini as UCI Road World Championships – Men's road race, World Champion, winning the road race in his home country, where Varese hosted the World Championships for the second time in history. Bettini and German cycling sprinter, sprinter Erik Zabel were among the most prominent riders to quit after this season, while Mario Cipollini made a brief comeback in the early months of the year. World University Cycling Championships
The World University Cycling Championship is a competition sponsored by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), which was first held in 1978 in Antwerp, Belgium. Before 1978 there were also World University Championships, but these were not sponsored by the International University Sports Federation. The latest edition was held in San Carlos, Costa Rica during 2024. The championship last five days and could contain events in five cycling sports: road cycling (road race and time trial), track cycling, mountainbike (cross-country and marathon), BMX and Cyclo-Cross. Iris Slappendel (born 18 February 1985) is a Dutch former road racing cyclist. Career She won the 2012 Open de Suède Vårgårda road race, the penultimate event in the 2012 UCI Women's Road World Cup. Slappendel took a total of five UCI race victories in her career, including the GP Comune di Cornaredo and stages of the Thüringen Rundfahrt der Frauen, the Ster Zeeuwsche Eilanden and La Route de France.
