2008 Hannover Sevens
The 2008 European Sevens Championship was a rugby sevens competition, with the final held in Hanover, Germany. It was the seventh edition of the European Sevens championship and also functioned as a qualifying tournament for the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens. The event was organised by rugby's European governing body, the FIRA – Association of European Rugby (FIRA-AER). Outcome The finals tournament held in Hanover, Germany on 12 and 13 July 2008, as well as being the European Sevens Championship, functioned as a qualifying tournament for the world cup. England, France and Scotland had already qualified through their past performance. The five best nations out of the twelve participating ones qualified for the Dubai tournament. Pedro Leal (rugby Union)
Pedro Miguel da Cunha Leal (born 28 April 1984, in Lisbon) is a Portugal, Portuguese international rugby football, rugby player and a regular on the World Rugby Sevens World Series circuit. He plays as a fullback or a scrum-half. He is widely considered Portugal's best player in rugby sevens, and in the 2006/07 IRB Sevens World Series he scored 20 tries from eight tournament appearances. He was the top scorer at the 2008 Hannover Sevens event, with 74 points. Leal is one of only nine players to have scored more than 1,000 points in the World Rugby Sevens World Series. Leal has 76 full caps for . He played three games at the 2007 Rugby World Cup. The Ireland national rugby sevens team competed in several international rugby sevens competitions. The team was governed by the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU). In May 2025 the IRFU dismantled the programme at the end of the 2024/25 season, insisting the move was part of "a broader strategic effort to ensure the IRFU's long-term financial sustainability. Wales National Rugby Sevens Team
The Wales national rugby sevens team did compete at the annual SVNS, World Rugby Sevens Series between 2000 and 2022, however merged with England national rugby sevens team, England and Scotland national rugby sevens team, Scotland to form the Great Britain national rugby sevens team, Great Britain sevens team from the 2022–23 World Rugby Sevens Series, 2022–23 season onward. The team also competes at the quadrennial Rugby World Cup Sevens and the Rugby sevens at the Commonwealth Games, Commonwealth Games. Russia National Rugby Sevens Team
The Russia national rugby sevens team competed in the World Rugby Sevens Series and the Rugby World Cup Sevens. After the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, World Rugby and Rugby Europe suspended Russia from international and European continental rugby union competition. In addition, the Rugby Union of Russia was suspended from World Rugby and Rugby Europe. Rugby World Cup Sevens Russia has competed at the 2001, 2005 and 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens. The team won the Plate final in 2001 to end 9th, with wins over Kenya, Spain and Georgia. In 2005 they finished 11th, collecting wins over Kenya, Uruguay and Japan. The German national rugby sevens team competes in the top-level European sevens competition, the Sevens Grand Prix Series. In 2012, Germany finished eleventh out of twelve teams and avoided relegation. The team also unsuccessfully took part in the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens qualifying tournament in Moscow in July 2012. Spain National Rugby Sevens Team
Spain's national rugby sevens team is one of 12 core teams participating in all ten tournaments of the World Rugby Sevens Series, having qualified by winning the 2017 Hong Kong Sevens qualifier tournament. Spain participated as a core team in the 2012–13 IRB Sevens World Series, but was relegated the following season. The team trains together at the country's Olympic training facilities in Madrid, which itself has been a result of the sport entering its first Olympic cycle. Spain won the 2016 Olympic qualifying repechage tournament by beating Samoa 22–19 to qualify for the last available qualifying spot for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Georgia National Rugby Sevens Team
The Georgia national rugby sevens team is a minor national sevens side. They have featured at the Rugby World Cup Sevens on four occasions and compete annually at the Rugby Europe Sevens. They have occasionally qualified for the World Rugby Sevens Series, but they have never been a 'core team' on the Sevens Series. Georgia has participated qualifying tournaments for the Olympics, but have never qualified. Georgia qualified for the 2024 World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series in Dubai. The Portugal national rugby sevens team played for the first time in 1992, at the Catania Sevens, World Cup 1993 European Qualifier. The team plays in competitions such as the World Sevens Series, the European Sevens Grand Prix Series and the Rugby World Cup Sevens. Portugal has a record of eight European titles—in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2011—although Portugal has not made the semifinals since 2012.
