2008 European Cup (athletics)
The 29th and final SPAR European Cup took place in June 2008. Track and field events were held on 21 and 22 June 2008 at the Parc des Sports Stadium in Annecy, France. Other event venues included Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Portugal and facilities in Istanbul, Turkey (for First League track and field events), Kadriorg Stadium in Estonia and SNP Stadium in Slovakia (for Second League track and field events), and facilities in Eindhoven, Netherlands (for diving and other water sports events). The Parc des Sports Annecy Stadium was also stadium for 1998 World Junior Championships in Athletics. It was the last edition of the European Cup which from 2009 has been replaced by European Team Championships combining the men and women competitions. Martyn Rooney
Martyn Joseph Rooney (born 3 April 1987) is an English sprinter who specialises in the 400 metres event. He reached the 400 m final at the 2008 Summer Olympics and won bronze in the 4×400 metres relay. A mainstay on the anchor leg of the Great Britain and England 4 x 400 metre relay teams, at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics he won a silver medal with the Great Britain relay team, and bronze in the 2015 and 2017 World Championships. Individually, Rooney is a two-time European champion at 400 metres in 2014. and 2016. A five time national champion, his personal best time of 44.45 seconds ranks third all-time in Great Britain behind national record-holders Matthew Hudson-Smith and Iwan Thomas. Richard Hill (runner)
Richard Hill (born 12 February 1986) is an English former middle-distance runner who competed in the 800 metres. He ran for Great Britain, Notts AC and UWIC. On 10 June 2006, Richard won the A-race of the BMC Grand Prix event at Watford in a time of 1:45.10. This time made Richard British No 1 for 2006. The race itself was notable too, because due to second placed Michael Rimmer and third placed Sam Ellis also running good times, British athletes held the top 3 places in the European 800m rankings (for a short while). This was the first time this had occurred in over 20 years. Richard competed for GB at the European Championships in Gothenburg in 2006.
