2008 Aktütün Attack
The 2008 Aktütün attack was a PKK attack on Turkish conscript soldiers that occurred on 3 October 2008 at the Aktütün Gendarmerie Border Station in the Şemdinli, Şemdinli district of Hakkari Province, Hakkari. The conflict took place at the 13th Gendarmerie Border Company Command, which is 4 kilometers from the Iraq War, Iraqi border and 40 kilometers from the Iranian border. 17 Turkish soldiers died and 21 were injured, two of them seriously, when 120 to 350 Kurdistan Workers' Party, PKK members opened fire at the station with heavy weaponry from the surrounding heights. 23 Kurdistan Workers' Party, PKK members were killed. During the conflict, two soldiers were reported missing and are thought to be dead. A variety of weapons were used in the attack, including anti-aircraft guns and different types of missiles. Şemdinli
Şemdinli (, or ) is a town located in the Şemdinli District of Hakkari Province in Turkey and had a population of 18,220 in 2023. The current mayor is Tahir Saklı from the Justice and Development Party (AKP), elected in 2019. The town is populated by Kurds of the Humaru and Zerzan Kurdish tribes and moreover of mixed tribal and non-tribal origin. Neighborhoods Şemdinli is divided into the five neighborhoods of Beşevler, Karşıyaka, Moda, Yayla and Yeni. Şemdinli District is a district in the Hakkâri Province of Turkey. The district had a population of 44,742 in 2023 with the town of Şemdinli as its seat. Its area is 1,209 km2. The district was established in 1936. Part of the district was separated to form Derecik District in 2018. The current district governor (''kaymakam)'' is Batuhan Taşgın.
