2007 Coventry Council Election
Elections for Coventry City Council were held on Thursday 3 May 2007. As the council is elected by thirds, one seat in each of the wards was up for election. The Labour Party gained two seats (Foleshill and Wyken) from the Conservative Party one seat (St Michaels) from Socialist Alternative, and one seat (Upper Stoke) from the Liberal Democrats. The Conservative party held overall control of the council. Coventry City Council
Coventry City Council is the local government body responsible for the governance of the City of Coventry in England, which has been a metropolitan district since 1974. The city is divided up into 18 Wards each with three councillors. Coventry has usually been controlled by the Labour Party over the past few decades, and at times they appeared to be in safe control. However, the Conservatives held control for a short time in the 1970s, and they also held control from July 2004 until 2010. For a time they held control on the casting vote of the Lord Mayor, but they won clear control at the local elections of 4 May 2006. However, in 2010 the Conservatives lost control of Coventry City Council when Labour gained enough seats to have overall control. The leader of the controlling Labour group is George Duggins. Coventry ( or ) is a city in the West Midlands, England. It is on the River Sherbourne. Coventry has been a large settlement for centuries, although it was not founded and given its city status until the Middle Ages. The city is governed by Coventry City Council. Formerly part of Warwickshire until 1451, Coventry had a population of 345,328 at the 2021 census, making it the tenth largest city in England and the 12th largest in the United Kingdom. 2007 English Local Elections
The 2007 UK local government elections were held on 3 May 2007. These elections took place in most of England and all of Scotland. There were no local government elections in Wales though the Welsh Assembly had a general election on the same day. There were no local government elections in Northern Ireland. Just over half of English councils and almost all the Scottish councils began the counts on Friday, rather than Thursday night, because of more complex arrangements regarding postal votes. These elections were a landmark in the United Kingdom as it was the first time that 18- to 20-year-olds could stand as candidates for council seats. The change was due to an alteration of the Electoral Administration Act. Coventry City Council elections are generally held three years out of every four, with a third of the council being elected each time. Coventry City Council is the local authority for the metropolitan borough of Coventry in the West Midlands, England. Since the last boundary changes in 2004, 54 councillors have been elected from 18 wards. Political control From 1889 to 1974 Coventry was a county borough, independent of any county council. Under the Local Government Act 1972 it had its territory enlarged and became a metropolitan borough, with West Midlands County Council providing county-level services.
