2007 Basildon District Council Election
The 2007 Basildon District Council election took place on 3 May 2007 to elect members of Basildon District Council in Essex, England. One third of the council was up for election and the Conservative Party stayed in overall control of the council. After the election, the composition of the council was: *Conservative 28 * Labour 11 * Liberal Democrats 3 Campaign The election saw the British National Party stand in 11 of the 14 wards being contested, an increase from 6 in 2006 and more than the Liberal Democrats who only stood in 9 seats. There was controversy during the election over comments by the Conservative candidate in Vange, Luke Mackenzie, in an election leaflet where he called for voters who did not want asylum seekers to get council houses to vote Conservative. Other parties called on the Conservatives to disown Mackenzie, who was standing against the only ethnic minority councillor in Basildon, saying he was "peddling scare stories" and that the comments were "infla ... Basildon District Council
The Borough of Basildon is a local government district with borough status in Essex, England. It is named after its largest town, Basildon, where the council is based. The borough also includes the towns of Billericay and Wickford and surrounding rural areas. The borough borders the City of Chelmsford to the north, the Borough of Brentwood to the west, the Thurrock unitary authority area to the south, the Borough of Castle Point to the south-east, and Rochford District to the north-east. History Billericay Urban District was created in 1934. In 1955 it was renamed Basildon Urban District to reflect the growth of Basildon, which had been designated a new town in 1949. Wickford is a town and civil parish in the south of the English county of Essex, with a population of 33,486. Located approximately 30 miles (50 km) east of London, it is within the Borough of Basildon along with the original town of Basildon, Billericay, Laindon and Pitsea. Wickford has a main high street which includes a wide range of shops. It also has a swimming pool, library, open-air market and a community centre within the vicinity of the town centre. Pitsea is a town and former civil parish in the Borough of Basildon in south Essex, England. It comprises five sub-districts: Eversley, Northlands Park Neighbourhood (previously known as Felmores), Chalvedon, Pitsea Mount and Burnt Mills. It is part of the new town of Basildon. During the creation of the new town of Basildon in the late 1940s and early 1950s, "Pitsea", "Vange" and "Laindon" were considered as possible names for the new town. As Basildon village was central to the district, the town was eventually named "Basildon". Before the new town regeneration, Pitsea itself was made up of unbuilt plot lands and was regarded as underdeveloped and run down. Laindon is a town and civil parish, which now forms part of the town of Basildon, in the Basildon district, in Essex, England. It is between Basildon and West Horndon. It was also an ancient parish. It was based on the manor of the same name. As of 2020, Laindon's population was 37,175. History The ancient Laindon parish included the chapelry of Basildon that became a civil parish in its own right in 1866. The parish included two detached pieces of coastal grazing land, one of which was on Canvey Island. It included a long finger of land north into the neighbouring parish of Great Burstead to include Laindon Common and the once larger and adjacent Frith Wood which the lord of the manor, the Bishop of London, emparked around 1260. This finger of land may have been the territory of Well Street Manor, which was mentioned in the Domesday Book. On 1 April 1937 the parish was abolished and merged with Billericay. Billericay ( ) is a town and civil parish in the Borough of Basildon in Essex, England. It lies within the London Basin, east of the City of London. The town was founded in the 13th century by the Abbot of West Ham, in his Manor of Great Burstead. During the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, the Essex rebels were defeated in a battle with Richard II's forces in the Battle of Billericay. In 1620 four local people were on board the Mayflower as it sailed to Massachusetts, to establish the first English settlement in what would become the north of the United States. The town has long taken a pride in this connection, and many businesses and other organisations use the name ''Mayflower'', with the Town Council and other local organisations using it as their emblem.
