2006 Beninese Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Benin on 5 March 2006. Long-term president Mathieu Kérékou, who had led the country for all but four years since 1972, was barred from running for a third term. The constitution not only stipulated an absolute two-term limit, but required presidents to be 70 years old or younger when taking office; Kérékou had turned 70 in 2003. In July 2005, Kérékou signalled that he would not seek to change the constitution, as has been done in some other African countries, so that he could run again. Kérékou's long-time rival Nicéphore Soglo was also barred from standing due to his age. With the men who had been among the country's leading political figures since the return of democracy barred from running, the campaign had a level of openness and unpredictability not common for African presidential elections. The West African Development Bank - WADB (fr. Banque Ouest Africaine de Développement - BOAD / pt. Léhady Vinagnon Soglo (born December 18, 1960) is a Beninese politician and economist. He was Mayor of Cotonou from 2015 until his dismissal in 2017. Born in Paris, Soglo is the son of Nicéphore Soglo, the former President of Benin from 1991 to 1996, and Rosine Vieyra Soglo, the former First Lady of Benin and founder of the Benin Rebirth Party. He was the candidate of the Benin Rebirth Party (RB) in the March 2006 presidential election, in which his father was barred from running due to a maximum age limit on candidates. He is an economist by training, with a degree from the University of Montréal. In the March 2007 parliamentary election, he was elected to the National Assembly of Benin as a candidate of the Alliance for a Dynamic Democracy, which included the RB. The Benin Rebirth Party () is a liberal political party in Benin. The party was founded on 24 March 1992 by then- First Lady Rosine Vieyra Soglo, who became the first Beninese woman to establish a new political party. The party was also headed by Vieyra Soglo after its foundation. It is led by Nicéphore Soglo, who was President of Benin from 1991 to 1996 and later Mayor of Cotonou. Rosine Vieyra Soglo established the party to provide political support for her husband, then-President Nicéphore Soglo, who lacked backing from Benin's political elite. It initially worked, as the Benin Rebirth Party won 20 of the 83 seats in the National Assembly in the 1995 Beninese parliamentary election.
