The 2006 Anchorage mayoral election was held on April 4, 2006, to elect the mayor of Anchorage, Alaska. It saw reelection of Mark Begich. Since Begich had received more than a 45% plurality of the vote, no runoff was necessary. Mark Begich
Mark Peter Begich ( ; born March 30, 1962) is an American politician who served as a United States senator from Alaska from 2009 to 2015. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as Mayor of Anchorage from 2003 to 2009. Born in Anchorage, Begich is the son of former U.S. Representative Nick Begich Sr. He was elected to the Anchorage Assembly at the age of 26. He eventually served as chairman for three years, before leaving the Assembly in 1998. Begich ran two unsuccessful campaigns for Mayor of Anchorage in 1994 and 2000 before being elected in 2003. He was subsequently reelected in 2006. In the 2008 Senate election, Begich narrowly defeated incumbent Ted Stevens, at the time the longest-serving Republican member of the U.S. Senate. In the 2014 Senate election, Begich was narrowly defeated in his bid for reelection by former Alaska Attorney General Dan Sullivan. This is a list of mayors of Anchorage, Alaska, United States. Anchorage was incorporated as a city on November 23, 1920. The Greater Anchorage Area Borough, which encompassed the city, was created in January 1964. The two were merged in a unified government called the Municipality of Anchorage on September 15, 1975. Under the current mayoral system, the mayor of the Municipality of Anchorage is elected in a non-partisan election to a three-year term and they are limited to two terms in office. 2000 Anchorage Mayoral Election
The 2000 Anchorage mayoral election was held on April 4 and May 2, 2000, to elect the mayor of Anchorage, Alaska. It saw election of George Wuerch. Incumbent mayor Rick Mystrom was term-limited. Proposition 10, passed in 1999, required mayoral candidates to receive 50% of the votes cast in a race to avoid a runoff. Since no candidate had received a majority of the vote in the first round, a runoff was held between the top-two finishers.
