2006 1000 Guineas
The 2006 1000 Guineas Stakes was a horse race held at Newmarket Racecourse on Sunday 7 May 2006. It was the 193rd running of the 1000 Guineas. The winner was Pam Sly, Michael Sly and Tom Davies's Speciosa, an Irish-bred bay filly trained by Pam Sly at Thorney in Cambridgeshire and ridden by Micky Fenton. Speciosa's victory was the first in the race for her owner, trainer and jockey. The race was run on soft ground. 1000 Guineas Stakes
The 1000 Guineas Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old fillies. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late April or early May on the Sunday following the 2000 Guineas Stakes. It is the second of Britain's five Classic races, and the first of two restricted to fillies. It can also serve as the opening leg of the Fillies' Triple Crown, followed by the Oaks and the St Leger, but the feat of winning all three is rarely attempted. Tommy Stack
Tommy Stack (born 15 November 1945 in Moyvane, County Kerry, Ireland) is a former National Hunt racing jockey and trainer. As a jockey, he is probably best known for piloting Red Rum to a third Grand National victory. Stack was National Hunt Champion Jockey for the 1974–75 and 1976-77 seasons. He got his first trainer's licence in 1986. In 1994 he trained Las Meninas to win the 1000 Guineas. His other major winners include Tarascon (Irish 1000 Guineas) and Kostroma (Beverly D. Stakes). Stack survived a life-threatening viral infection in December 1998. Following his recovery, he had further international success with Myboycharlie (Prix Morny) and Alexander Tango ( Garden City Stakes). He trained at Golden, County Tipperary and retired as a trainer at the end of the 2016 flat racing season, handing over the licence to his son, James "Fozzy" Stack. The Prix du Calvados is a Group 2 flat horse race in France open to two-year-old thoroughbred fillies. It is run at Deauville over a distance of 1,400 metres (about 7 furlongs), and it is scheduled to take place each year in August. History The event is named after Calvados, the department in which Deauville is located. It was established in 1970, and it was initially contested over 1,300 metres. It is run at Ascot over a distance of 6 furlongs (1,207 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in June. Fred Darling Stakes
The Fred Darling Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old fillies. It is run over a distance of 7 furlongs () at Newbury in April. History The event was established in 1949, and it was initially called the Lambourn Stakes. It was named after Lambourn, a nearby village associated with racehorse training. For a period the race was contested over 7 furlongs and 60 yards. It continued with its original name until 1954, and was given its present title in 1955. It was renamed in memory of Fred Darling, a successful local trainer who died two years earlier. The Dubai Duty Free company started to sponsor the Fred Darling Stakes in 1996. Lowther Stakes
The Lowther Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in Great Britain open to two-year-old fillies. It is run at York over a distance of 6 furlongs (1,207 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in August. History A different event called the Lowther Stakes, a middle-distance race open to horses aged three or older, used to be contested at Newmarket.
