The Italy national rugby union team ( Italian: ''Squadra nazionale italiana di rugby'') represents Italy in men's international rugby union. The team is known as ''gli Azzurri'' (the light-blues). Savoy blue is the common colour of the national teams representing Italy, as it is the traditional colour of the royal House of Savoy which reigned over the Kingdom of Italy from 1860 to 1946. Italy has played international rugby since 1929, and for decades was considered one of the best European teams outside the Five Nations Championship. Since 2000, Italy has competed annually in the Six Nations Championship with England, France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Petru Bălan
Petru Vladimir Bălan (born 12 July 1976, in Suceava) is a Romanian retired rugby union footballer who played as a prop. Before moving to play rugby in France he played for Dinamo Bucharest in Romania, including playing for them in the 1998–99 European Challenge Cup. He played for FC Grenoble in the 2002–04 Challenge Cup and European Shield competitions. He moved to Biarritz for the 2003–04 season. He was a part of the team that won the 2004–05 Top 16 and the 2005–06 Top 14. Also with Biaritz Olimpique were runners-up to Munster in the 2005–06 Heineken Cup. Francesco Mazzariol
Francesco "Coco" Mazzariol (born 1 March 1975 in Treviso) is an Italian former rugby union footballer and a current coach. He played firstly as a scrum-half, and later in his career (with more success) at fly half. Career Mazzariol first played at Benetton Treviso, where he became a professional for the season of 1995/96. He would play for his home team until 2002/03, then moving to Gran Parma Rugby, where he played until 2009/10, when he finished his career. The Italian fly half then signed for Rugby Parma F.C. at 2005/06, where he still plays. Mazzariol played in the 2006 Heineken Cup play-off game against the Dragons kicking 11 vital points in a 24-16 victory. Paul Kaine Robertson (born 29 October 1980 in Auckland) is a rugby union player from New Zealand who plays rugby union for Viadana, and international rugby for Italy. Auckland born Kaine Robertson moved to Italy in 1998, previously he played in the same Auckland Grammar school team as the All Blacks leading try scorer Doug Howlett. Andrea Masi
Andrea Masi (born 30 March 1981) is a retired Italian rugby union footballer. His usual position was in the centres but he has also played at fly-half and at full-back. His last club before retirement was the English Premiership club Wasps. In a 16-year international career lasting from 1999 to 2015, Masi won 95 caps for the Italy national team, and was a part of their squad at four World Cups in 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015. Masi was born in L'Aquila, Abruzzo. He was recognized as a talented player at an early age, and he made his debut for L'Aquila at the age of 16. Nicola Mazzucato (born 27 October 1975 in Padua) is a former Italian rugby union footballer and the former coach of the SMRUFC. He played as a wing achieving over 40 caps for Italy, playing in 2 world cups and 4 trips to the 6 nations. Mazzucato first played at CUS Padova Rugby, from 1994/95 to 1998/99, moving then to Benetton Treviso, where he stayed from 1999/2000 to 2002/03. He spent two seasons at Rugby Calvisano, followed by two more seasons at Overmach Rugby Parma. Gonzalo Canale
Gonzalo Canale (born 11 November 1982) is an Italian Argentine rugby union footballer. His usual position is in the centre or at full back. He plays for French club ASM Clermont Auvergne. Canale has also been capped for the Italy national team, and was a part of their squad at the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia and the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.
