2003 Southern Sting Season
The 2003 Southern Sting season saw the Southern Sting netball team compete in the 2003 National Bank Cup league season. With a team coached by Robyn Broughton, captained by Lesley Nicol and featuring Tania Dalton, Adine Harper, Donna Loffhagen and Wendy Telfer, Sting won their fifth consecutive league title. In the semi-final, they defeated Otago Rebels 56–43. In the grand final, they defeated Northern Force 51–49. It was the first time in the history of the league that it featured a South Island v North Island final. Robyn Broughton
Robyn Denise Broughton (née Quirk) is a New Zealand netball coach. Broughton coached the Southern Sting from 1998 to 2007 during the National Bank Cup, winning seven titles in ten years. She was also an assistant coach for the New Zealand national netball team from 2000 to 2002, and is currently a national selector. From 2012 to 2015, Broughton coached the Central Pulse in the ANZ Championship, after four years with the Southern Steel and later coached the Hertfordshire Mavericks in the Netball Superleague. Domestic netball The National Bank Cup (NBC) started in 1998 as New Zealand's first franchise-based netball competition. Broughton was appointed head coach of the Invercargill-based Southern Sting, and remained with the franchise throughout the competition's ten-year run. Reinga Bloxham
Reinga Bloxham, also known as Reinga Te Huia, is a former New Zealand netball player and current coach. During the Coca-Cola Cup/National Bank Cup era, she played for Southern Sting. Since 2016, she has served as head coach of Southern Steel in the ANZ Premiership. In 2017 and 2018, Bloxham guided Steel to two successive ANZ Premiership titles. Early life and family Bloxham is a Māori with Ngāti Kahungunu affiliations. She was born and raised in Southland. Capital Shakers are a former New Zealand netball team that were based in Wellington. Between 1998 and 2007, Shakers played in the Coca-Cola Cup/National Bank Cup league. Western Flyers
The Western Flyers were a New Zealand netball team which represented most of the Central, Southern and Eastern North Island in the National Bank Cup. The team was formed in 1998 and played all ten seasons of the competition. At the end of the 2007, the Flyers merged with the Capital Shakers to form the Central Pulse, one of five New Zealand teams in the ANZ Championship, which commenced in 2008. Irene Van Dyk
Irene van Dyk (née Viljoen; born 21 June 1972) is a South African-born New Zealand netball player. A goal-shooter, van Dyk is one of the world's best-known netballers and is the most capped international player of all time: in every game she consistently attained over 90%. She is recognised as the greatest goal-shooter of all time. Van Dyk has had a huge impact on Netball, and almost single-handedly changing the way it is played, both in New Zealand and around the world, while contributing immensely to its growing popularity. Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic are a New Zealand netball team based in Hamilton. Between 1999 and 2007, they played in the Coca-Cola Cup/National Bank Cup league. Edgar Centre
The Edgar Centre is a large multi-purpose indoor sports venue in South Dunedin, New Zealand, on the shore of Otago Harbour close to Andersons Bay Inlet. It is the home venue of the Otago Nuggets basketball team, and an alternate venue for the Southern Steel netball team. The centre also hosts a wide variety of other sports events and community events such as auctions and fairs, and is owned by the Dunedin City Council.
