2003 Cannes Film Festival
The 56th Cannes Film Festival took place from 14 to 25 May 2003. French opera and theatre director, filmmaker, actor and producer Patrice Chéreau was the President of the Jury for the main competition. Monica Bellucci hosted the opening and closing ceremonies. American filmmaker Gus Van Sant won the ''Palme d'Or'', the festival's top prize, for the drama film ''Elephant (2003 film), Elephant'', based on the Columbine High School massacre. Ingmar Bergman was awarded with the Honorary Palme d'Or for his contributions to cinema throughout his career. Jenny Holzer
Jenny Holzer (born July 29, 1950) is an American neo-conceptual artist, based in Hoosick, New York. Richard Warren Schickel (February 10, 1933 – February 18, 2017) was an American film historian, journalist, author, documentarian, and film and literary critic. He was a film critic for ''Time'' from 1965–2010, and also wrote for ''Life'' and the ''Los Angeles Times Book Review''. His last writings about film were for Truthdig. He was interviewed in '' For the Love of Movies: The Story of American Film Criticism'' (2009). In this documentary, he discusses early film critics Frank E. Woods, Robert E. Geoff Andrew
Geoff Andrew (born 1954) is a British writer, lecturer, teacher, film programmer and occasional broadcaster. Born in Northampton, he studied at Northampton Grammar School and went on to gain a First in Classics at King's College, Cambridge. Andrew was for some years manager and programmer at London's Electric Cinema in Notting Hill, and later became the long-serving editor and chief critic of the film section of '' Time Out'' magazine. Abderrahmane Sissako (; born 13 October 1961) is a Mauritanian-born Malian film director and producer. His film '' Waiting for Happiness'' (''Heremakono'') was screened at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival official selection under Un Certain Regard, winning a FIPRESCI Prize.
