2002 Texas Attorney General Election
The 2002 Texas Attorney General election took place on November 5, 2002, to elect the attorney general of Texas. Republican state supreme court justice Greg Abbott defeated Democrat Kirk Watson, the former mayor of Austin, with 56.7% of the vote to win his first term as attorney general, he was sworn into office on January 20, 2003. Kirk Preston Watson (born March 18, 1958) is an American attorney and politician who has served as the 59th mayor of Austin since 2023, previously holding the office as the 54th mayor from 1997 to 2001.
