2002 Slough Borough Council Election
The 2002 Slough Borough Council election was held on 2 May 2002, at the same time as other local elections across England. Fourteen of the 41 seats on Slough Borough Council were up for election, being the usual third of the council (13 seats) plus a by-election in Stoke ward, following the death of Liberal councillor James Moore. 2002 United Kingdom Local Elections
Local elections took place in many parts of England on 2 May 2002. All London borough council seats were elected as well a third of the seats on each of the metropolitan borough, Metropolitan Boroughs. Many Unitary Authority, unitary Authorities and Non-metropolitan district, District councils also had elections. There were no local elections in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Summary of results Simon Parker of ''The Guardian'' described the elections as "a round of embarrassing [sic] defeats for Labour in a set of council elections that also saw opposition parties making minor inroads into the party's dominant position in local government. Slough Borough Council
Slough Borough Council is the local authority for the Borough of Slough, in Berkshire, England. Slough is a unitary authority, having the powers of a county and district council combined. Berkshire is purely a ceremonial county, with no administrative responsibilities. History Slough's first local authority was the Slough Local Board, established in 1863. This became Slough Urban District Council in 1894. In 1938 the town was granted a charter of incorporation as a municipal borough, with the council then taking the name Slough Corporation. The municipal borough was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972 on 1 April 1974, and replaced by Slough Borough Council, when the town was also transferred from Buckinghamshire to Berkshire. On 1 April 1998, Slough Borough Council became a unitary authority when Berkshire County Council was abolished, taking over the county council's former functions. Liberal Party (UK, 1989)
The Liberal Party is a liberal political party in the United Kingdom that was founded in 1989 as a continuation of the original Liberal Party (founded in 1859) by former members who opposed its merger with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to form the Liberal Democrats. The party holds eleven local council seats. The party promotes a hybrid of both classical and social liberal tendencies. History The original Liberal Party entered into an alliance with the Social Democratic Party in 1981 and merged with it in 1988 to form what became the Liberal Democrats. Independent Britwellian Residents
Britwellian is the name chosen by two local political groups, which have contested elections in the three member Britwell Ward of Slough Borough Council. The regular Council elections in Slough are normally for a third of the Council, with one seat contested in each ward. The 2004 election was for the whole Council, following boundary changes. The Britwellian Group were a registered political party founded in 2002 by, inter alia, Councillor Mavis L. Gallick, Paul Janik, Sean Wright, Gillan Swan, Dennis Lees and Paula Murphy. Cllr Gallick served as a Britwellian Councillor from 2000 until her death. After Councillor Gallick's death in 2002, an internal dispute about the 'ownership of the party' forced the majority of members including Paul Janik, Sean Wright, Dennis Lees and Paula Murphy to form a new political party called the Independent Britwellian Residents (IBR).
