2002 MLS All-Star Game
The 2002 Major League Soccer All-Star Game was the 7th edition of the Major League Soccer All-Star Game, played on August 3, 2002 at RFK Memorial Stadium in Washington, D.C. The match was contested by the MLS All-Stars team and the United States on the invitation of MLS, who looked to capitalize on their success at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Bruce Arena assembled a roster of the national team's most prominent domestic players in the last decade in place of the European-based players from the 2002 World Cup roster to rest them; then-San Jose Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop formed an All-Star team of the top talent among the league's remaining players. 2002 Major League Soccer Season
The 2002 Major League Soccer season was the seventh season of Major League Soccer. It was also the 90th season of FIFA-sanctioned soccer in the United States, and the 24th with a national first-division league. According to FC Dallas president Dan Hunt, the entire league nearly folded during the 2001 offseason. The owners agreed to shut down the league on a conference call in November 2001, but within two days Lamar Hunt convinced the other owners to give the league another year. On January 8, 2002, the league folded two of its teams, both of which were in Florida. The Miami Fusion ceased operations after only four years of existence due to low attendance and an unfavorable stadium deal. The Tampa Bay Mutiny also ceased operations due to the lack of local ownership. Additionally, the league eliminated the Central Division and returned to the original two-conference alignment. Landon Donovan
Landon Timothy Donovan (born March 4, 1982) is an American former professional association football, soccer player and coach who was most recently the interim head coach of San Diego Wave FC of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Often considered the greatest U.S. mens player of all time, Donovan is tied for the world record for the male with the most international assists (58), and is tied with Clint Dempsey for the most international goals scored by a male U.S. player (List of international goals scored by Landon Donovan, 57). Carlos Bocanegra
Carlos Manuel Bocanegra (born May 25, 1979) is an American sports executive and former professional soccer player. A two-time MLS Defender of the Year, Bocanegra also played professionally in England, Scotland, France, and Spain. He earned over 100 caps with the United States, serving as captain for six years. He most recently served as technical director and vice president for Atlanta United. Early life and education Bocanegra was born in Upland, CA on May 25, 1979, to Manuel and Kelly Bocanegra. Mike Petke
Mike Petke (born January 30, 1976) is an American former soccer player and coach who was most recently head coach of Major League Soccer club Real Salt Lake. Prior to his tenure with Real Salt Lake, he was head coach of the New York Red Bulls, leading them to the Supporters' Shield in 2013. Playing career College Petke attended St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip, New York, where he was selected as an All-American, before moving on to play college soccer in Southern Connecticut State University. Ryan Shepard Suarez (born July 28, 1977) is an American soccer former player, who last played in United Soccer Leagues for the California Victory. Early career Born in Sacramento, Suarez graduated from Oakmont High School in nearby Roseville, California. Timothy Matthew Howard (born March 6, 1979) is an American former professional soccer player who played as a goalkeeper. He is the part-owner of club Dagenham & Redbridge as well as an international ambassador in the United States for Premier League club Everton. Steve Ralston (born June 14, 1974) is an American former soccer player and manager who played as a midfielder. He spent most of his playing career in Major League Soccer with the Tampa Bay Mutiny and the New England Revolution, retiring in 2010 as the league's all-time career leader in assists (135), appearances (378), starts (372), and minutes played (33,143).
