2002 Kansas City Royals Season
The 2002 Kansas City Royals season was the 34th season for the franchise, and their 30th at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals failed to improve on their 65-97 record from 2001, and finished fourth in the American League Central, with a record of 62 wins and 100 losses, their first 100 loss season in franchise history. American League Central
The American League Central is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. This division was formed in the realignment of 1994 by moving three teams from the American League West and two teams from the American League East. Its teams are all located in the Midwestern United States. Along with the National League East, the AL Central is one of two divisions in the Major Leagues in which all of its members have won a World Series title. In Major League Baseball, a player to be named later (PTBNL) is an unnamed player involved in exchange or "trade" of players between teams. The terms of a trade are not finalized until a later date, most often following the conclusion of the season. Postponing a trade's final conditions or terms is often done for several reasons. First, the team receiving the PTBNL might not be certain which position they want to fill, so this type of deal gives them more time to figure it out. Second, this type of arrangement gives the team receiving the PTBNL more time to evaluate the available talent on the other team. Roberto Manuel Hernández Rodríguez (born November 11, 1964) is a Puerto Rican former professional baseball right-handed relief pitcher. Jason Alan Grimsley (born August 7, 1967) is an American former Major League Baseball relief pitcher who played for seven teams during a 15-year career. He was a member of both the 1999 and 2000 World Series champion New York Yankees. Major League career Jason attended Tarkington High School in Cleveland, Texas. He was selected 10th round (252nd overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies of the 1985 June amateur Baseball draft. Like many relief pitchers, Grimsley began his career as a starting pitcher. Ryan Adrien Bukvich (born May 13, 1978) is an American former professional baseball relief pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, and Baltimore Orioles. Career Bukvich attended the University of Mississippi. Bukvich was called up to the White Sox in June along with Bret Prinz, replacing the struggling David Aardsma and Mike MacDougal. Miguel DePaula Asencio (born September 29, 1980) is a Dominican former Major League Baseball pitcher. He began his professional career in in the Dominican Republic. In 11 games, he went 0–2 with a 6.55 ERA. Asencio was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent on July 2, 1998. He threw and batted left-handed and played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Kansas City Royals, Colorado Rockies, Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants.
