The 2002 season was the 10th season of competitive association football in Armenia. Premier League * FC Malatia disbanded before the start of the season. FC Lori from Vanadzor were given another chance to stay up. * Karabakh Yerevan changed their name to Lernayin Artsakh FC. First League * Araks, Lokomotiv Yerevan, Dinamo Yeghvard, and Nork Marash FC are introduced to the league. * Arpa FC, and FC Vanadzor returned to professional football. * Karmrakhayt Armavir changed their name back to FC Armavir. Lernayin Artsakh FC () is an association football club formerly based in Stepanakert, Artsakh Republic but is registered in the town of Vayk, Vayots Dzor Province, Armenia. The club was founded in 1927 in Soviet Azerbaijan and its current name translates from Armenian as "''Mountainous Artsakh''". History The club was founded in 1927 under the name ''Dinamo Stepanakert''. In 1960, the name was changed to ''Karabakh'' and remained by that name until 1989 when it was renamed ''Artsakh''. During the years between 1992 and 1995 they were unable to participate in any competition due to the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. In 1995, the club moved from Stepanakert to Yerevan in order to participate in the Armenian Premier League. They subsequently changed their name back to ''Karabakh''. FC Lokomotiv Yerevan (), is a defunct Armenian football club from the capital Yerevan. History During the Soviet rule, Lokomotiv Yerevan football team was formed in 1945 after World War II, representing the state railway department of the city of Yerevan. They won the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic championship in 1963. The current FC Lokomotiv Yerevan was founded in 2002 and participated in the Armenian First League during the same year. However, the club was dissolved in 2005 prior to the kick-off of the First League season, due to financial difficulties. Araks Ararat FC (), is Armenian football club from the town of Ararat, Ararat Province. Club history The club was founded in 1960 as FC Ararat to represent the town of Ararat. With the independence of Armenia, the Ararat Cement Factory took over FC Ararat in 1993 and the club was renamed FC Tsement Ararat. They played in the Armenian Premier League and won two titles, the first in 1998 as Tsement and the 2nd in 2000 as Araks Ararat. The following year, Tsement yielded the championship to FC Shirak by two points and ended up on the third spot behind Ararat Yerevan. However, after many successful years, the club president ''Abraham Babayan'' was unable to finance the club. Vanadzor (, ) is an urban municipal community and the third largest city in Armenia, serving as the capital of Lori Province in the northern part of the country. It is located about north of the capital Yerevan. As of the 2011 census, the city had a population of 86,199, down from 148,876 reported at the 1979 official census. Lori FC () was an Armenian football club based in Vanadzor, Lori Province. Originally founded in 1936, Lori has participated in the domestic football competition of Soviet Armenia. After retiring from professional football in 2002, the club was revived in 2017 winning the 2017–18 Armenian First League competition. History The club participated in the first ever Armenian football competition after the split-up from the Soviet Union. After the regular competition, they did not qualify for the championship stage, but were forced to play in the relegation stage. Here they finished in the seventh position, which forced them to play in the Armenian First League (second level) for the 1993 season. In that season they finished first in their group (the league was split up into two groups) which gave them promotion to the Armenian Premier League.
