2002 Hong Kong Sevens
The 2002 Hong Kong Sevens was an international rugby sevens tournament that took place at the Hong Kong Stadium between 22–24 March 2002. It was the 27th edition of the Hong Kong Sevens and was the seventh tournament of the 2001–02 World Sevens Series. Twenty-four teams competed in the tournament and were separated into six groups of four with the top eight teams qualifying through to the cup tournament. After winning their three group matches, England went on to win their first Hong Kong title defeating Fiji in the final by a score of 33–20. In the plate-final, South Africa defeated Scotland while Morocco took home the bowl defeating Chinese Taipei. Teams Compared to other tournament of the series, the Hong Kong Sevens had 24 teams compete for the title instead of the regular sixteen teams that usually competed in a World Series event. 2001–02 World Sevens Series
The 2001–02 World Sevens Series was the third edition of the global circuit for men's national rugby sevens teams, organised by the International Rugby Board. The series ran from November 2001 to May 2002. New Zealand was the series champion for a third consecutive year, and won seven of the eleven tournaments. No other country won more than one tournament during the season. South Africa and England won their first tournaments on the world circuit and finished in second and third place on the final series standings, respectively. Italy National Rugby Sevens Team
The Italy national rugby sevens team has occasionally competed in the IRB Sevens World Series since the series' was introduced in 1999, although they do not participate in every leg. Their first (and currently only) ever points in the World Series came in 2003, when they scored four points in the Cardiff leg of the series. Italy also competes in the Rugby Europe Sevens Grand Prix Series each summer. Italy also plays qualifying matches for two quadrennial tournaments—the Rugby World Cup Sevens and the Summer Olympics. Scotland National Rugby Sevens Team
The Scotland national rugby sevens team competes in the World Rugby Sevens Series, Rugby World Cup Sevens and the Commonwealth Games. The head coach is Ciaran Beattie, supported by manager Sean Lamont and skills coach Graham Shiel. During 2006, the side were in danger of no longer competing in the Sevens World Series due to the financial problems faced by the Scottish Rugby Union. However, they gained a reprieve when the International Rugby Board announced that a leg of the Sevens World Series would be held at Murrayfield in Edinburgh, starting in 2007. The SRU then announced that the Scotland sevens team would compete in all eight legs of the Sevens World Series, and draw players from the country's national academy. 2001 Hong Kong Sevens
The 2001 Hong Kong Sevens was an international rugby sevens tournament that was held in Hong Kong as the fourth leg of the 2000–01 World Sevens Series. The tournament took place at the Hong Kong Stadium on 30 March–1 April 2001. The hosts, Hong Kong, finished third in Pool C but went on to defeat the West Indies 47–5 in the Bowl final. Defending World Sevens Series champions, New Zealand, successfully defended their Hong Kong Sevens title by defeating Fiji 29–5 in the Cup final. Format The teams were drawn into six pools of four teams each. Each team played the other teams in their pool once, with 3 points awarded for a win, 2 points for a draw, and 1 point for a loss (no points awarded for a forfeit). The South African national rugby sevens team competes in the World Rugby Sevens Series, the Rugby World Cup Sevens, the Summer Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games. The Fiji National Rugby Sevens Team has competed in the World Rugby Sevens Series, Rugby World Cup Sevens and the Olympics.
