2001–02 WHL Season
The 2001–02 WHL season was the 36th season for the Western Hockey League. Nineteen teams completed a 72-game season. The Kootenay Ice won the President's Cup before going on to win the Memorial Cup. League notes *The Vancouver Giants joined the WHL as its 19th franchise. *The Swift Current Broncos moved from the East division to the Central division. *The Kootenay Ice moved from the Central division to the B.C. division. *With the addition of the Giants, the WHL abandoned the three division format and moved to two conferences of two divisions each. Ten teams in the East and nine in the West. *The top four teams in each division qualified for the playoffs, though the 5th place team in the B.C. division could qualify in place of the 4th place team in the U.S. division if they had a better record. Western Hockey League
The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. The WHL is one of three leagues that constitutes the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) as the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. Teams play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup, with the winner moving on to play for the Memorial Cup, Canada's national junior championship. WHL teams have won the Memorial Cup 19 times since the league became eligible to compete for the trophy. Many players have been drafted from WHL teams, and have found success at various levels of professional hockey, including the National Hockey League (NHL). Kelowna Rockets
The Kelowna Rockets are a major junior ice hockey team based in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. The Rockets play in the Western Hockey League (WHL), out of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). They play their home games at Prospera Place. The Rockets have won the WHL championship four times and have made it to the Memorial Cup finals three times, winning once. The Rockets captured the Memorial Cup for the first time in franchise history in 2004, the same year they were selected to host the event. The Rockets returned to the Memorial Cup finals in both 2009 and 2015, losing to the Windsor Spitfires in 2009 and the Oshawa Generals in 2015. Duncan Milroy
Duncan Alexander James Milroy (born February 8, 1983) is a Canadian retired ice hockey right winger who played five games in the National Hockey League for the Montreal Canadiens. Playing career Milroy played in the junior hockey in the Western Hockey League for the Swift Current Broncos. He was drafted in the second round, 37th overall, by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. After a few seasons with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL, Milroy was recalled by the Montreal Canadiens in February 2007 and played 5 games with the team gathering 1 point (an assist). He was reassigned to Hamilton on February 25, 2007, where he remained until the end of the 2007–08 season. Mikhail Yurievich Yakubov (born February 16, 1982) is a Russian former professional ice hockey center who is currently an assistant coach for the Chicago Cougars of the United States Premier Hockey League. He last played with HC Sochi of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Yakubov was drafted 10th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Jeremy Dunn Jackson (born October 16, 1980) is an American actor and singer. He is best known for his role as Hobie Buchannon on the television show ''Baywatch''. Josef Balej
Jozef Balej (born February 22, 1982) is a Slovak former professional ice hockey right winger. He spent parts of three seasons in the National Hockey League, and several seasons in the Czech Extraliga. Playing career As a youth, Balej played in the 1995 and 1996 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments with a team from Bratislava. Balej left his native Slovakia in 1998 to develop his game in North America, and spent a season in the USHL before moving to the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League. After a solid first season in Portland in which he recorded 22 goals, Balej was selected 78th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. He would spend two more seasons in Portland, turning in a dominant performance in 2001–02 with 51 goals in 65 games. Tyler Beechey (born. June 5, 1981) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward who is currently playing with the Innisfail Eagles in the semi-professional Chinook Hockey League (ChHL). Undrafted, Beechey has previously played for the Straubing Tigers after joining on June 29, 2012, from the DEG Metro Stars. Eric Johansson (born January 7, 1982) is a Swedish-Canadian former professional ice hockey player. Playing career Canadian-born Johansson started his hockey career in 1997, playing for Tri-City Americans in the junior league Western Hockey League. In the 2002–03 season, he joined the Albany River Rats in AHL, scoring 53 points in 151 games during the regular seasons. In his professional career, Lupul played in the NHL for the Anaheim Ducks, Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers and Toronto Maple Leafs.
