2001–02 South African Premiership
The 2001–02 South African Premiership, known as the 2001–02 Castle Premiership for sponsorship purposes, and also commonly referred to as the PSL after the governing body, was the sixth season of the Premiership since its establishment in 1996. Santos surprisingly won the title under the mentorship of Gordon Igesund. This side featured players like Edries Burton, Andre Arendse, Musa Otieno and the club's all-time top goalscorer Jean-Marc Ithier Jean-Marc Ithier (born 15 July 1965 in Rodrigues) is a retired Mauritian footballer. South African Premiership
The South African Premiership, also known as the Betway Premiership for sponsorship reasons, and commonly referred to as the PSL after its governing body, is a professional soccer league in South Africa and the highest level of the South African soccer league system. It has been organised since 1996. The 2024–25 season started on 14 September 2024, Mamelodi Sundowns successfully defended the title in 2025 which they've held continuously since the 2017–18 season. History The league was founded in 1996 after an agreement between the National Soccer League and the remnants of the National Professional Soccer League. It is stated on its website that the former name still exists today, but for legal purposes, with the ''Premier Soccer League'' being its trade name. Mamelodi Sundowns
Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club (simply known as Sundowns) is a South African professional football club based in Mamelodi, Pretoria in the Gauteng province that plays in the Premiership, the first tier of South African football league system. Founded in the 1970s, the team plays its home games in the Loftus Versfeld Stadium. They won the 2016 CAF Champions League, 2017 CAF Super Cup and were voted the 2016 CAF Club of the Year. As of 2025, it is the most successful football club in the South African PSL era with 15 league titles. Domestically, they have also won the Nedbank Cup six times, the MTN 8 four times and the Telkom Knockout four times. They are the first South African team to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup, where they finished in 6th place. Umtata Bush Bucks
Bush Bucks is a South African soccer club. The club was founded in 1957 and originally based in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. In 2001, the team moved to East London. It was nicknamed ''Imbabala (The Bucks)''. History The club was formed by a former official of the Bush Bucks club from Durban who had moved to the area. It was named Umtata Bush Bucks. They moved to East London (outside of the former homeland of Transkei) in 2001, until suffering relegation at the end of the 2002/03 season. They returned after only one season, but were relegated again at the end of 2005/06 season. In 2007 Sturu Pasiya became the sole owner when he purchased a license to participate in the SAFA Second Division from Lion City FC. In 2019, Pasiya was sentenced to five years imprisonment for tax offences. The club relocated to Mthatha prior to the start of the 2022–23 season. Lamontville Golden Arrows
Lamontville Golden Arrows F.C. are a South African soccer club based in Durban that plays in the Premiership. History It was founded in 1943 in the streets of Lamontville, a township in Durban. The club played in the defunct National Professional Soccer League in the 1970s until they were relegated in 1976. They played in the Second Division thereafter until 1980 when they were embroiled in a soccer scandal and thrown out of the National Professional Soccer League. The team was formed again in 1996 when the Madlala family bought the Second Division franchise of Ntokozo FC and changed its name to Lamontville Golden Arrows. In 2000 they won promotion to the Premiership by winning the National First Division Coastal Stream.
