The 2001 Slough Borough Council election was held on 7 June 2001, at the same time as other local elections across England and Northern Ireland, and on the same day as the general election. Fourteen of the 41 seats on Slough Borough Council were up for election, being the usual third of the council. 2001 United Kingdom Local Elections
Local elections took place in some parts of the UK on 7 June 2001. Elections took place for all of the English shire counties, some English unitary authorities and all of the Northern Ireland districts. The elections were delayed from the usual date of the first Thursday in May due to the 2001 foot and mouth crisis and were held on the same day as the general election. While the results were overshadowed by the re-election of the Labour government, they did provide some comfort to the Conservative party. The Conservatives consolidated their position as the largest party on the English county councils. Summary of results The results of the English local elections saw the Conservative party make significant progress, gaining control of a further five councils. 2001 United Kingdom General Election
The 2001 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 7 June 2001, four years after the previous election on 1 May 1997, to elect 659 members to the House of Commons. The governing Labour Party was re-elected to serve a second term in government with another landslide victory with a 167 majority, returning 413 members of Parliament versus 419 from the 1997 general election, a net loss of six seats, though with a significantly lower turnout than before—59.4%, compared to 71.6% at the previous election. The number of votes Labour received fell by nearly three million. Tony Blair went on to become the only Labour Prime Minister to serve two consecutive full terms in office. As Labour retained almost all of their seats won in the 1997 landslide victory, the media dubbed the 2001 election "the quiet landslide". Slough Borough Council
Slough Borough Council is the local authority for the Borough of Slough, in Berkshire, England. Slough is a unitary authority, having the powers of a county and district council combined. Berkshire is purely a ceremonial county, with no administrative responsibilities. History Slough's first local authority was the Slough Local Board, established in 1863. This became Slough Urban District Council in 1894. In 1938 the town was granted a charter of incorporation as a municipal borough, with the council then taking the name Slough Corporation. The municipal borough was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972 on 1 April 1974, and replaced by Slough Borough Council, when the town was also transferred from Buckinghamshire to Berkshire. On 1 April 1998, Slough Borough Council became a unitary authority when Berkshire County Council was abolished, taking over the county council's former functions. Britwellian
Britwellian is the name chosen by two local political groups, which have contested elections in the three member Britwell Ward of Slough Borough Council. The regular Council elections in Slough are normally for a third of the Council, with one seat contested in each ward. The 2004 election was for the whole Council, following boundary changes. The Britwellian Group were a registered political party founded in 2002 by, inter alia, Councillor Mavis L. Gallick, Paul Janik, Sean Wright, Gillan Swan, Dennis Lees and Paula Murphy. Cllr Gallick served as a Britwellian Councillor from 2000 until her death. After Councillor Gallick's death in 2002, an internal dispute about the 'ownership of the party' forced the majority of members including Paul Janik, Sean Wright, Dennis Lees and Paula Murphy to form a new political party called the Independent Britwellian Residents (IBR).
