Presidential elections were held in Seychelles on 31 August and 2 September 2001. They were won by the incumbent president, France-Albert René, who beat his nearest rival Wavel Ramkalawan by just under 5,000 votes. Philippe Boullé is a Seychellois lawyer and politician. In the country's first multiparty presidential election, held in July 1993, he was the candidate of a three-party coalition known as the 'United Opposition'. He won 3.78% of the vote, finishing a distant third behind the incumbent President France-Albert René (59.50%) and James Mancham (36.72%).Elections in the Seychelles African Elections Database. United Seychelles Party
United Seychelles is a political party in Seychelles. It publishes a newspaper called ''The People''. It was known as the Seychelles People's Progressive Front (french: Front Progressiste du Peuple Seychellois) until June 2009, when it changed its name to the People's Party (Seychellois Creole: ''Parti Lepep'', PL). The party changed its name again in November 2018, from the People's Party to United Seychelles. The party was founded in 1964 by France-Albert René, under the name Seychelles People's United Party, and it was led by him from its inception. The SPUP was the ruling party from 1977 to 2020 and was the sole legal party in the country from 1979 to 1991 (this period is referred to retrospectively as the "Second Republic"). France-Albert René (; 16 November 1934 – 27 February 2019) was a Seychellois lawyer, politician and statesman who served as the second President of Seychelles from 1977 to 2004. He also served as the country's 2nd Prime Minister from its independence in 1976 to 1977. He was nicknamed by Seychellois government officials and fellow party members as "the Boss". His name is often given as simply Albert René or F.A. René; he was also nicknamed Ti France. Annette Mary Solange Georges (born 1957) is a lawyer, Seychellois politician and the first leader of the Seychelles United Opposition Party. Biography Annette Georges was born in Seychelles in 1957. She grew up in a family that was already involved in the politics of her country. Her father was a minister and a member of the Seychelles National Assembly on the ticket of Seychelles Democratic Party (SDP) that later metamorphosed into the SDP-SPUD after forming a coalition with the Seychelles People's Unity Party (SPUP). She studied law in the United Kingdom and was called to the bar in 1980. Her first job upon return from the United Kingdom was a position in the office of the Attorney General.
