2001 Pacific Typhoon Season
The 2001 Pacific typhoon season was an average season with twenty-six named storms, sixteen typhoons and three super typhoons, with a near normal Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) of 307.3 units. It ran year-round in 2001, with most tropical cyclones in the northwestern Pacific Ocean tending between May and November. The early season was relatively inactive, with the first named storm, Cimaron, not developing until May 9. Taiwan suffered the most destruction from typhoons this year, with Typhoons Toraji, Nari, and Lekima being responsible for nearly 300 deaths in that island alone, making it one of the deadliest typhoon seasons in recorded history in that island. In November, Typhoon Lingling impacted the Philippines, killing 171 people, making it one of the deadliest Philippine storms this century. Severe Tropical Storm Durian was a deadly system that caused severe impacts in China and Vietnam in late-June and early-July 2001. The seventh tropical depression and third named storm of the 2001 Pacific typhoon season, the storm was first noted on June 29 and quickly intensified into a tropical storm and given the name Durian by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Durian continued northwestward before intensifying into a severe tropical storm as it approached the Chinese coast. Typhoon Chebi (2001)
Typhoon Chebi known in the Philippines as Typhoon Emong, was a powerful tropical cyclone that caused damage and deaths in five countries, the Philippines, Taiwan, China, South Korea, and Japan in late-June 2001. The fourth depression, second named storm, and first typhoon of the 2001 Pacific typhoon season, Chebi formed from an area of convection that developed into a tropical depression southeast of Palau. The depression quickly strengthened into Tropical Storm Chebi six hours later. Chebi continued to move westward, passing over cooler waters, which caused Chebi to weaken, but it still maintained tropical storm status as it entered the Luzon Strait on June 23. Within a mature tropical cyclone, it is found within the eyewall at a certain distance from the center, known as the radius of maximum wind, or RMW.
