2001 Carrickfergus Borough Council Election
Elections to Carrickfergus Borough Council were held on 7 June 2001 on the same day as the other Northern Irish local government elections. Carrickfergus Borough Council
Carrickfergus Borough Council was a district council in County Antrim in Northern Ireland. It merged with Ballymena Borough Council and Larne Borough Council in May 2015 under local government reorganisation in Northern Ireland to become Mid and East Antrim Borough Council. The council was based at Carrickfergus Town Hall and the council administered the town, on the north shore of Belfast Lough, and surrounding area, which extended from Greenisland in the south-west to Whitehead in the east. The borough was , with a population of just over 39,000. Together with the neighbouring district of Larne and small parts of Newtownabbey and Moyle, it formed the East Antrim constituency for elections to the Westminster Parliament and Northern Ireland Assembly. Local Government In Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is divided into 11 districts for local government purposes. In Northern Ireland, local councils do not carry out the same range of functions as those in the rest of the United Kingdom; for example they have no responsibility for education, road-building or housing (although they do nominate members to the advisory Northern Ireland Housing Council). Their functions include planning, waste and recycling services, leisure and community services, building control and local economic and cultural development. David Hilditch
David Hilditch (born 11 December 1963) is a Unionist politician from Northern Ireland representing the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). Hilditch has been a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for East Antrim since 1998. Hilditch was born in 1963 in Carrickfergus. He previously worked in the construction industry and for Royal Mail between 1987 and 1998. In February 1997 he was awarded the RUC Bravery Award following a post office robbery. He was first elected to Carrickfergus Borough Council in 1991. He was elected as deputy mayor in 1995 and elected to mayor in 1997 and also served as mayor from 2004 to 2008. He was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for East Antrim in 1998 and again in both 2003 and 2007. He was one of the top questioners in the 1998–2003 Assembly, serving on the Employment and Learning Committee and Culture Arts and Leisure Committee. Kilroot was one of the three district electoral areas in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland which existed from 1985 to 2014. The district elected five members to Carrickfergus Borough Council from 1985 to 1993, and six members from 1993 to 2014, and formed part of the East Antrim constituencies for the East Antrim (Assembly constituency), Northern Ireland Assembly and East Antrim (UK Parliament constituency), UK Parliament. It was created for the 1985 Carrickfergus Borough Council election, 1985 local elections, replacing Carrickfergus Area B which had existed since 1973, and contained the wards of Blackhead, Boneybefore, Eden, Victoria and Whitehead.
