2000–2001 Vendée Globe
The 2000–2001 Vendée Globe is a non-stop solo Round the World Yacht Race for IMOCA 50 and IMOCA 60 class yachts. This is the fourth edition of the race starting on the th November 2000 from Les Sables-d'Olonne. Summary The departure originally planned for Sunday, November 5 but the decision was made to delay the postponed start till Thursday, 9 November 2000 a delay of 4 days due to bad weather. This race was the first major test of the new safety rules, introduced following the tragedies the previous races. Overall, it was a success; although some boats were again forced to retire from the race, none were lost. This race also featured the youngest entrant ever: Ellen MacArthur, who at 24 years old managed to put together a serious campaign with her custom-built boat ''Kingfisher''. Les Sables-d'Olonne
Les Sables-d'Olonne (; French meaning: "The Sands of Olonne"; Poitevin: ''Lés Sablles d'Oloune'') is a seaside town in Western France, on the Atlantic Ocean. A subprefecture of the department of Vendée, Pays de la Loire, it has the administrative level of commune. On 1 January 2019, the municipalities of Olonne-sur-Mer, Château-d'Olonne and Les Sables-d'Olonne merged, retaining the latter name. Location and geography Les Sables-d'Olonne is a seaside town in western France, on the Atlantic Ocean. Joé Seeten
Joé Seeten is a French sailor born on 31 May 1957 in Dunkirk. Biography He discovered sailing thanks to his father, who acquired his first boat in 1967. Joé has had a passion for sailing ever since. He trained as an electric technician. He set up his company, La Voilerie, where for seventeen years he designed and produced sails. At the same time he participates in numerous crew races (Tour de France à la voile, Quarter Tonner World Championship, Discovery Route, Trans-Atlantic Twostar) which allows him to evaluate and prove his sails. The hull and deck are made out of pre-impregnated T800H carbon fibre sandwich with a Nomex core. The bow region under the waterline is a single skin carbon composite. All of this has been cured at 120°C. The boat has central water ballast and is 2 tonnes lighter than previous generations. Bernard Gallay
Bernard Gallay (born 7 November 1959) is a French yachtsman and businessman. He has competed in the Vendée Globe twice ( 1992/93 and 2000/01) and finished his career as a professional sailor whilst participating in the Transat 6.50 in 2005. In 1994, he moved to Montpellier in the South of France and founded Bernard Gallay Yacht Brokerage. Mike Golding
Mike Golding (born 27 August 1960) is an English yachtsman, born in Great Yarmouth and educated at Reading Blue Coat School. He is one of the few yachtsmen to have raced round the world non stop in both directions. He held the solo record for sailing round the world westabout (the most challenging direction for circumnavigation) between 1994 and 2000. Golding, who was named president of the Little Ship Club in 2017 and is a member of Royal Southampton Yacht Club, is the eponymous co founder of the commercial company Mike Golding Yacht Racing Ltd. His partner in this venture was Jorgen Philip-Sorensen (d.2010). Golding led the team ''Group 4'' to second place in the British Steel Challenge in 1992–3.
