2000 Palauan General Election
General elections were held in Palau on 7 November 2000. Thomas Remengesau Jr. was elected president, whilst Sandra Pierantozzi was elected vice president. Results President Vice-President Sandra Pierantozzi was elected vice president with 52% of the vote, defeating her nephew Alan Seid, who received 45% of the vote. Peter Sugiyama
Peter Lawrence Naoya Sugiyama (19 April 1943–10 June 2007) was a Palauan politician. Personal life Sugiyama's father was a Japanese immigrant. He moved to Koror in 1914 at the invitation of his uncle, after the Japanese Empire seized control of the islands as part of its World War I invasion of German New Guinea (which control would later be formalised by the League of Nations as the South Seas Mandate). He began his new life there as a teacher, but would go on to manage a fruit packing company and a cafe. He married Rosang Sayoko Serek, the daughter of a local chieftain. Peter Sugiyama himself was born to Hayato and Rosang on April 19, 1943. Kuniwo Nakamura
was a Palauan politician who served as the president of Palau from 1993 to 2001. He had earlier served as vice president of Palau from 1989 to 1993, under Ngiratkel Etpison. Background and early life Nakamura was the son of a Japanese immigrant from Matsusaka, Ise Province and a Palauan chieftain's daughter. He was studying in his second year of primary school when the surrender of Japan ended World War II. He graduated from high school under the U.S. occupation of Palau and went on to study at the University of Hawaii. Personal life and death Nakamura was married to his wife Elong Nakamura for over 50 years. They had children. Elong later died on 17 November 2018 the age of 71. Nakamura died on 14 October 2020 at the age of 76. Career Nakamura began his political career at the age of 28, becoming the youngest person to be elected to the Congress of Micronesia. Sandra Pierantozzi
Sandra Sumang Pierantozzi (born 9 August 1953) is a Palauan politician. She served as the country's Vice-President from 19 January 2001 to 1 January 2005. Pierantozzi was defeated by Camsek Chin in the 2 November 2004 vice-presidential election, winning only 28.9% of the vote. Career Pierantozzi was born in Palau and holds degrees from San Diego State University, the University of Hawaii and Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was elected a Senator from 1996-2001 and during that time she was the floor leader. In the 2000 vice-presidential elections, she was elected Vice President of Palau. Alan Rechuldak Seid (born June 9, 1957) is a Palauan businessman and politician of partially American Jewish origin. He was elected into House of Delegates of Palau from 1989 until 2000.
