2000 Northern Ford Premiership
The 2000 Northern Ford Premiership season was the second tier of British rugby league during the 2000 season. The competition featured eighteen teams, with Dewsbury Rams finishing as league leaders and winning the Grand Final. Championship The league was won by the Dewsbury Rams. The Dewsbury Rams also reached the Grand Final and defeated Leigh Centurions, with Leigh Centurions' Mick Higham winning the Tom Bergin Trophy. The Dewsbury Rams were not promoted to the Super League however, as their stadium did not meet the minimum requirements to be accepted into the league. The Rugby Football League Championship Second Division was founded in 1902 and was the second tier of professional rugby league in the UK until 2003. During the 1990s a third division was established and there is automatic promotion between the second and third division. History The Second Division was formed in 1902 by splitting the RFL Championship into two divisions of 18. After three seasons the Second Division was abolished and not resurrected until 1962. Two seasons later in 1964 the Second Division was scrapped for the second time. The division was resurrected again in 1973 and has been played every season since. During the 1991–92 season, a third division was established and, for the first time, two teams were relegated. There was no regular relegation from the Second Division until 2003. The 2000 Challenge Cup (officially known as the 2000 Silk Cut Challenge Cup for sponsorship reasons) is a rugby league football tournament which began its preliminary stages in December 1999 and ended with the final on 29 April 2000. The final was held on Saturday, 29 April 2000, at Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh, UK. The game was won by Bradford Bulls who defeated Leeds Rhinos 24–18. First round The first round was scheduled for the weekend of 4/5 December 1999, but due to cold weather leading to frozen pitches, a number of games were postponed. Gigg Lane
Gigg Lane is a football ground in Bury, Greater Manchester, England, built for Bury F.C. in 1885. The first match was played on 12 September 1885 between Bury and a team from Wigan. One of the world's oldest professional football stadiums, Gigg Lane was in continuous use by Bury until August 2019 when the club was expelled from the English Football League. The ground did not host competitive men's football between 4 May 2019, when Bury hosted Port Vale, and 29 July 2023. In November 2020, Bury F.C. was placed in administration and the ground was later put up for sale by the administrator. Liam Bretherton
Liam Bretherton (born 20 June 1979) is a former Ireland international rugby league footballer who played for the Wigan Warriors, Leigh Centurions, Warrington Wolves, Blackpool Panthers and Workington Town. He played on the . He played at representative level for Ireland at the 2000 Rugby League World Cup. Bretherton started his professional career at Warrington Wolves, making two appearances for the club during the 1997 season. After spending time on loan at Whitehaven in 1998, he signed for Wigan Warriors after a successful trial.
