2000 IIHF World Championship
The 2000 IIHF World Championship was held in Saint Petersburg, Russia from 29 April to 14 May. Qualification This was the final year for qualifying rounds (except 'Far East'). Five teams advanced out of the eight that participated in the two European groups. The top two from each group played in the World Championship, and the third place teams played off against each other for the final spot. Both groups were played 11–14 November 1999. Ice Palace (arena)
The Ice Palace (Russian: Ледовый Дворец, ''Ledovy Dvorets'') is an arena in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It was built for the 2000 IIHF World Championship and opened in 2000. It holds 12,300 people. The Ice Palace is primarily used for ice hockey and was the home arena for SKA Saint Petersburg from 2005 until 2024, when the team moved into the new SKA Arena, the largest hockey arena in the world. It hosted the IIHF European Champions Cup in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. It is also used for concerts, exhibitions and as a skating rink. Alexei Zhitnik
Alexei Zhitnik (, ; born October 10, 1972) is a Ukrainian-Russian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He has represented the Soviet Union, CIS, and Russia internationally; and Ukraine during two NHL All-Star Games. His number, 13, has been honored by Sokil Kyiv. Playing career Zhitnik was drafted 81st overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft after playing for Sokil Kyiv in the Soviet Championship League for two years. After another year, he came to the NHL for the 1992–93 NHL season. Zhitnik made his NHL debut on October 6, 1992, against the Calgary Flames and scored his first goal nine nights later, also against Calgary. Pavel Vladimirovich Bure (, ; born 31 March 1971) is a Russian former professional ice hockey player who played the Winger (ice hockey), right wing position. Nicknamed "the Russian Rocket" for his speed, Bure played for 12 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers and New York Rangers between 1991 and 2003. Alexei Nikolaevich Kudashov (; born July 21, 1971) is a Russian former professional ice hockey forward and current head coach for HC Dynamo Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Viktor Nikolayevich Kozlov (; born 14 February 1975) is a Russian former professional ice hockey center and coach. He is the current head coach of the Kontinental Hockey League's Salavat Yulaev Ufa. Playing career Kozlov was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the first round as the sixth overall selection in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. Kozlov scored his first career goal for the Sharks against Ed Belfour and the Chicago Blackhawks on 21 March 1995 in a 7–3 Sharks loss. Oleg Viktorovich Petrov (''Олег Викторович Петров''; born April 18, 1971) is a Russian former ice hockey right winger. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) between 1992 and 2003. Professional career Petrov was drafted 127th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft and became the first Russian to play for the team. He played in 382 career NHL games, scoring 72 goals and 115 assists for 187 points. The most goals he ever scored in a single season in the NHL was 24 and the most points he ever achieved was 47. He won a Stanley Cup in 1993 with the Montreal Canadiens; however, he did not play enough games to officially qualify, so his name was not put on the Stanley Cup. Maxim Sergeyevich Afinogenov (, ; born September 4, 1979) is a Russian former professional ice hockey player. Known for his skating speed, he was drafted by the National Hockey League (NHL)'s Buffalo Sabres in the third round, 69th overall, in 1997 and played nine seasons with the club. Alexander Yevgenievich Kharitonov (, born March 30, 1976) is a Russian former professional ice hockey right wing. Career Kharitonov was drafted in the third round, 81st overall, by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft from HC Dynamo Moscow at the age of 24. He signed with the Lightning for the 2000-01 NHL season and played in sixty-six games in his rookie season, scoring seven goals and fifteen assists for twenty-two points. Andrei Viktorovich Markov (; born 20 December 1978) is a Russians, Russian-Canadians, Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He played in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) and with the Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League (NHL). His last name is sometimes transliterated as Sushinski or Sushinskiy.
