Levi Barnabas
Levi Barnabas (born January 24, 1964) is a Canadian politician. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Northwest Territories in 1995 and served until Nunavut was created in 1999. Barnabas served as the first Speaker in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Curling
Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called ''rocks'', across the ice ''curling sheet'' toward the ''house'', a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a ''game''; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each ''end'', which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their stones once. A game usually consists of eight or ten ends. The player can induce a curved path, described as ''curl'', by causing the stone to slowly rotate as it slides. Christianne West
Christianne West (born February 1, 1999) is a Canadian curler from Iqaluit, Nunavut. She currently plays third on Team Sadie Pinksen. Career West played in eight Canadian Junior Curling Championships from 2013 to 2020 as third for Sadie Pinksen. Her best finish was a 2–7 record in 2016, 2018 and 2020. She also represented Nunavut at the 2015 Canada Winter Games, finishing in eleventh with a 2–6 record. In 2018, she won a bronze medal at the 2018 Arctic Winter Games. While still in juniors, West got to participate in the 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts as the alternate for the Amie Shackleton rink. Originally listed as the team's alternate, West played in seven of the team's eight games and the team finished in last place with an 0–8 record. Iqaluit
Iqaluit ( ; , ; ) is the capital of the Canadian territory of Nunavut, its largest community, and its only city. It was known as Frobisher Bay from 1942 to 1987, after the large bay on the coast on which the city is situated. In 1987, its traditional Inuktitut name was restored. In 1999, Iqaluit was designated the capital of Nunavut after the division of the Northwest Territories into two separate territories. Before this event, Iqaluit was a small city and not well known outside the Canadian Arctic or Canada, with population and economic growth highly limited. Legislative Building Of Nunavut
The Legislative Building of Nunavut is a structure in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada that serves as the seat of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Designated Building 926, it consists of a three-storey glass and wood structure with a two-storey assembly hall. Construction The Nunavut Construction Corporation (now NCC Investment Group) was selected to design, build and operate the legislative building. NCC contracted the Montreal architecture firm Arcop to design the building and the design was first presented to the public in December 1997. Construction began in May 1998 and completed in September 1999, with the building officially opened in a ceremony on October 19, 1999. NCC Investment Group continues to own and operate the building, which is leased to the territorial government.
