''The Port Arthur News'' is six-day morning newspaper published every day except Mondays in Port Arthur, Texas, covering Jefferson County. It is owned by Boone Newspapers. The newspaper has not missed an issue since March 17, 1897, when the Stump family, leaving Missouri, printed the first weekly edition in a baggage car of a train on the way to their new home. ''The News'' went daily (except Sunday) in 1901, and a Sunday edition was added in 1916 (although it was later abandoned, and then reintroduced). By 1920, all of Port Arthur's other newspapers had either folded or been bought out by ''The News''. A Texas newspaper chain begun by E.S. Fentress and Charles Marsh bought ''The News'' in 1921, overseeing headquarters and press improvements, until Cox Enterprises bought it in 1976. Heritage Microfilm, Inc. (est. 1997) is a preservation microfilm and microfilm digitization business located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. History The company began in 1996 when the microfilm division of Cedar Rapids-based Crest Information Technologies was sold to Christopher Gill. The microfilm division was responsible at the time for preserving newspapers and for microfilming business documents. The business document filming portion of the business was soon dropped in favor of the newspaper microfilming division. Crest in 1999 sold the remaining portion of the company to Lason. In 1999, Heritage Microfilm began digitizing newspaper microfilm and launched NewspaperArchive. Soon after, it began creating smaller "branded" newspaper archive websites in collaboration with publishing partners. The firm works with ANSI/AIIM standards for preservation microfilming. From 1836 to 1845, the Republic of Texas elected presidents. In 1845, it was admitted to the United States as the state of Texas. Texas gubernatorial elections are held every four years on the nationwide Election Day, which is the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. They are held on years that are even-numbered, but not multiples of four, also known as a midterm, so they do not coincide with the presidential elections. Texas Senate elections are held every four years on the same date as gubernatorial elections. Texas House elections are held every two years on Election Day. They are held on even-numbered years.
