A Member of the European Parliament (MEP) is a person who has been elected to serve as a popular representative in the European Parliament. When the European Parliament (then known as the Common Assembly of the ECSC) first met in 1952, its members were directly appointed by the governments of member states from among those already sitting in their own national parliaments. Since 1979, however, MEPs have been elected by direct universal suffrage. Earlier European organizations that were a precursor to the European Union did not have MEPs. Each member state establishes its own method for electing MEPs – and in some states this has changed over time – but the system chosen must be a form of proportional representation. Paavo Väyrynen
Paavo Matti Väyrynen (born 2 September 1946) is a Finnish politician and former member of the Finnish Parliament who has represented the Seven Star Movement, the Citizen's Party and Centre Party. He is currently member of Centre Party. Väyrynen has been a member of the Finnish Parliament previously from 1970 to 1995, and again from 2007 to 2011 and has held many ministerial portfolios. He has also been a Member of the European Parliament from 1995 to 2007, and again from 2014 to 2018. Väyrynen has been the Centre Party candidate for Finnish president three times – finishing second in 1988, third in 1994 and third in 2012. Piia-Noora Kauppi (born 7 January 1975, in Oulu) is the managing director of the (2008) and a former Member of the European Parliament (MEP) of the European People's Party (1999-2008). Kauppi has a Master of Laws degree. She also studied economics at the Helsinki School of Economics and took some post-graduate studies at Harvard and Yale in the United States. Ulpu Iivari (born 20 March 1948 in Salla) is a Finnish Social-Democrat politician and former Member of the European Parliament (MEP). A journalist by education, Iivari began her political career as a representative in the Finnish Parliament for one term from 1991 to 1995, when she moved into the European Parliament. A farmer by trade, he served as a member of the Parliament of Finland for 24 years, from 1975 to 1999, representing the Centre Party. Samuli Pohjamo (born 4 April 1950) is a Finnish Centre Party of Finland, Centre Party politician and journalist, born in Oulu. He has served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 1999 to 2004, and again from 19 April 2007. In the spring of 1999, the Finnish Member of the European Parliament, MEP Sirkka-Liisa Anttila opted to resign three months before her term was up to accept a position in the Parliament of Finland. Matti Ossian Wuori (July 16, 1945 in Helsinki – October 15, 2005) was a Finnish lawyer, politician, and Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Green League in 1999–2004. His father died early which left his mother to raise him while running a kiosk. Wuori graduated from the University of Helsinki and became active in cultural and political movements since the late 1960s. He reported annually about the state of international human rights during his term in the European Parliament. Wuori was the chairman of Greenpeace Finland, 1989–1998, and Greenpeace International, 1991–1991. Wuori died after a long battle with cancer. Pertti Olavi "Veltto" Virtanen (born 18 May 1951 in Hämeenlinna) is a rock personality, former presidential candidate, and former member of the Finnish Parliament from Tampere, Finland. In music he performed both as a solo artist and in the bands Virtanen (with Moog Konttinen), Välikausitakki and Sammas. Ilkka Olavi Suominen (8 April 1939 – 23 May 2022) was a Finnish politician from the National Coalition Party. He was President of the Nordic Council in 1992. He was member of the parliament from 1970 to 1975 and from 1983 to 1994. Suominen was the chairman of the National Coalition Party 1979–1991 and twice the speaker of the parliament 1987 and 1991–1994.
