1998 World Wrestling Championships
The following is the final results of the 1998 World Wrestling Championships. Men's Freestyle competition were held in Tehran, Iran. Men's Greco-Roman competition were held in Gävle, Sweden and Women's competition were held in Poznań, Poland. Guivi Sissaouri
Guivi "Gia" Sissaouri ( ka, გივი სისაური, tr, born April 15, 1971) is a Georgian-Canadian former freestyle wrestler. Biography Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, Sissaouri began wrestling at age ten. He would later become a citizen of Canada. Sissaouri won the silver medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in the 57 kg class. He also won the gold at the 2001 World Championships at Sofia, Bulgaria in the 58 kg class, a silver at the 1995 World Championships in Atlanta, Georgia in the 57 kg class, a bronze at the 1998 World Championships at Tehran, Iran in the 58 kg class, and another bronze at the 1997 World Championships at Krasnoyarsk, Russia also in the 58 kg class. Abbas Jadidi (; born 13 January 1969) is an Iranian wrestler who competed in the Freestyle Heavyweight (90–100 kg) category at the 1996 Summer Olympics, losing to Kurt Angle and winning the silver medal A silver medal, in sports and other similar areas involving competition, is a medal made of, or plated with, silver awarded to the second-place finisher, or runner-up, of contests or competitions such as the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, .... Yoel Romero Palacio (born April 30, 1977) is a Cuban professional mixed martial artist and former freestyle wrestler who currently competes in the Light Heavyweight division. Romero formerly competed in the Middleweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he was a challenger for the UFC Middleweight Championship, and in Bellator MMA. Mogamed Ibragimkhalilovich Ibragimov (; ; ; born 22 July 1974) is a Russian-born Macedonian wrestler. At the 1996 Summer Olympics he competed for Azerbaijan and finished fifth in the freestyle 82 kg event. Alireza Heidari (; born March 4, 1976, in Tehran) is a retired Iranian wrestler who competed in the Men's Freestyle 96 kg at the 2004 Summer Olympics and won the bronze medal. Alexander Leipold (born 2 June 1969 in Alzenau in Unterfranken) is a German former freestyle wrestler who won the German Championships eleven times, the European Championships three times, the World Championships in 1994, and won the tournament at the 2000 Summer Olympics but was later stripped of his gold medal for doping. Buvaisar Saitiev
Buvaisar Hamidovich Saitiev (, ; 11 March 1975 – 2 March 2025) was a Russian wrestler and politician. His total of nine world-level gold medals (three Olympics, six World Championships) in freestyle wrestling is second highest, behind Aleksandr Medved's 10. Saitiev is widely considered to be the greatest freestyle wrestler of all time; in 2007, he and Greco-Roman practitioner Aleksandr Karelin were voted the best wrestlers in the history of the sport by FILA. After his retirement from competition, Saitiev served as an acting deputy from Dagestan in the 7th State Duma from 2016 until he stepped down in 2021. In 2015, he became the President of the Chechen Wrestling Federation, a position he held until his death in 2025. Lincoln Paul McIlravy (born July 17, 1974) is an American former freestyle and folkstyle wrestler. High School and College Career McIlravy wrestled for Philip High School in Philip, South Dakota where he won five state titles, going on to wrestle in college for the University of Iowa under celebrated coach Dan Gable. He was a four-time finalist and three-time NCAA Wrestling Division I champion, winning in 1993, 1994 and 1997. International career McIlravy later competed for the United States in the 1998 and 1999 World Championships, 1999 Pan Am Games, and the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, where he won the bronze medal in the Freestyle 69 kg competition. Arayik Gevorgyan (, born 22 January 1973) is a retired Armenian Freestyle wrestler. He is an Armenian Champion, European Champion, and three-time World Champion. Gevorgyan was awarded the Master of Sports of the USSR, International Class title in 1991 and the Honored Master of Sports of Armenia title in 1995.
