1998 WNBA Season
The 1998 WNBA season was the Women's National Basketball Association's second season. The 1998 season saw two expansion teams join the league, the Detroit Shock and Washington Mystics with an expansion draft being held on February 18, 1998. The expansion teams allowed the defending champions, Houston Comets, to move to the Western Conference. The regular season was extended from 28 games to 30 games. During the season, Kelly Boucher became the first Canadian to play in the league, suiting up for the Charlotte Sting. The season ended with the Comets winning their second WNBA championship. Women's National Basketball Association
The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is a women's professional basketball league in the United States. The league comprises 13 teams (scheduled to expand to 15 in 2026). The WNBA is headquartered in Midtown Manhattan. The WNBA was founded on April 24, 1996, as the women's counterpart to the National Basketball Association (NBA); league play began in 1997. The regular season runs from May to September, with each team playing 44 games. The top eight teams (regardless of conference) qualify for the playoffs, culminating in the WNBA Finals, which is played in October. Tracy Reid
Tracy LaShawn Reid (born November 1, 1976) is a former professional WNBA basketball player. Reid attended college at University of North Carolina and graduated in 1998. Selected by the Charlotte Sting in the first round (7th overall) of the 1998 WNBA draft, Reid went on to capture the 1998 WNBA Rookie of the Year. After three seasons with the Sting, Reid was dealt to the Miami Sol. She also played with the Phoenix Mercury and Houston Comets. Reid is the daughter of musician and songwriter Clarence Reid (a.k.a. Blowfly). WNBA Rookie Of The Year
The Women's National Basketball Association's Rookie of the Year Award is an annual Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) award given since the 1998 WNBA season, to the top rookie of the regular season. The winner is selected by a panel of sportswriters throughout the United States, each of whom casts a vote for first, second and third place selections. Each first-place vote is worth five points; each second-place vote is worth three points; and each third-place vote is worth one point. The player(s) with the highest point total, regardless of the number of first-place votes, wins the award. The 2003 award winner Cheryl Ford and 2011 award winner Maya Moore are the only players to win both the WNBA Rookie of the Year award and a WNBA championship in the same season. Sandy Brondello
Sandra Anne Brondello (born 20 August 1968) is an Australian professional basketball coach and former player who is the head coach of the New York Liberty of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), and the Australian women's national team. Brondello played in Australia, Germany and the WNBA before retiring to become a coach. The 5’7” (1.70 m) Brondello is one of Australia's all-time best shooting guards. She played on Australia's "Opals" national team at four Summer Olympics, has coached the team at two more, and won three medals (one bronze, two silvers) as a player and one bronze medal as a coach. The Women's National Basketball Association Peak Performer awards are given each year to players who lead the WNBA in scoring, rebounding, and assists. Suzie McConnell Serio
Suzie McConnell-Serio (born July 29, 1966) is an American former women's basketball coach and player. She was the head coach for the women's basketball team at the University of Pittsburgh from 2013 to 2018. In 2004, she was named WNBA Coach of the Year as coach of the Minnesota Lynx. She was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
