Events *5 January - British children's television series ''Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends'' begins airing on German television for the first time ever after only being released on home video since 1995. The series will begin airing on RTL II. *27 February - Guildo Horn is selected to represent Germany at the 1998 Eurovision Song Contest with his song " Guildo hat euch lieb!". He is selected to be the forty-third German Eurovision entry during Countdown Grand Prix held at the Stadthalle in Bremen. PB Bear And Friends
''PB Bear and Friends'' is a series of children's books by Lee Davis that has also been made into a British children's television series. Much like the ''Paddington'' series, the characters are stuffed puppets that are animated with the stop-motion technique. In the UK, the series aired on Channel 5's Milkshake! and was repeated on Tiny Pop & previously on Nick Jr. Characters *PB Bear – A bear who is the main character of the books and the show. He is also Roscoe's best friend and is really friendly. In the books, his name "P.B." is revealed to stand for "Pajamas and Bedtime", as they are stated to be his favourite clothes. *Roscoe – A rabbit who is PB Bear's best friend. ''Dinnerladies'' (stylised as ''dinnerladies'') is a British television sitcom created, written and co-produced by Victoria Wood. Two series were broadcast on BBC One from 1998 to 2000, with sixteen episodes in total. The programme is repeated on Gold, and Drama. The complete series was released on DVD in November 2004. The series is set almost entirely in the canteen of HWD Components, a fictional factory in Manchester, featuring the caterers and regular customers as the main characters. ''Whizziwig'' is a science fiction children's programme broadcast on CITV between 7 January 1998 and 16 February 2000 based on the books by award winning children's author Malorie Blackman. Plot summary Whizziwig centres on the adventures of a boy called Ben and his best friend Steve who befriend a small pink alien approximately the size of a rugby ball, whose ship crash lands on the roof of Steve's home during her interplanetary travel to visit relatives and which now needs repairing. Whizziwig has the ability to grant wishes to anyone who utters the words "I wish...", however wishes had to be made for someone else and would last a maximum of 24 hours. A recurring theme is Ben and Steve trying to deceive their friend into granting their intentional wishes only for the alien to become wise to the scheme. ''The Wombles'' is an animated series for children transmitted in 1997 and 1998, based on the 1973 series created by Elisabeth Beresford. ''The Wombles'' had remained popular with children into the 1980s. After FilmFair was acquired by the Canadian company Cinar Films in 1996, a new series of episodes was made, with three new Womble characters. ''Bananas in Pyjamas'' is an Australian children's television series that first aired on 20 July 1992 on ABC. It has since been syndicated in many countries and dubbed into other languages. In the United States, the " Pyjamas" in the title was modified to reflect the American spelling ''pajamas''. ''The Angry Beavers'' is an American animated sitcom created by Mitch Schauer for Nickelodeon. The series revolves around the zany hijinks of Norbert and Daggett Beaver, two young beaver brothers who have moved out of their parents' home to become bachelors in the forest near the fictional Wayouttatown, Oregon. The series premiered in the United States on April 19, 1997, and ended its initial run on November 11, 2003.
