The House of Representatives of Belize is the lower chamber of the National Assembly of Belize, National Assembly, the other being the Senate of Belize, Senate. It was created under the Constitution of Belize, 1981 constitution. Members are commonly called "Area Representatives". Area Representatives are elected by winning a majority of votes in their respective Constituencies of Belize, constituencies under the First-past-the-post voting, first-past-the-post system. George Singh
George Bawa Singh (May 1937 – 9 March 1999) was a Belizean judge who served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1998 and as a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court from 1991 to 1998. He previously served as Solicitor General and Director of Public Prosecutions. Early life Singh was born in May 1937. His father Bawa Singh Mann was a Sikh who had immigrated from India in the 1930s. Singh himself converted to Christianity. He graduated from Wesley College in 1954. That same year, he wrote three poems: "Dawn", "Dusk", and "Soliloquy of a Murderer". He received the Gold Medal for the last one in a national poetry competition. Career After his graduation, Singh briefly worked as a primary school teacher before joining the public service in 1955. The Belize Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) is the primary electoral body in Belize. It supervises all local and national elections. The commission also establishes the boundaries of Belize's electoral divisions. Formation and duties The EBC was formed in 1978 to oversee Belizean elections according to the Representation of the People Act. This Act became part of the Belize Constitution in 1981. The commission maintains a database of Belizean voters and periodically informs the nation on the state of the voter's list.
