1998 Arizona Senate Election
The 1998 Arizona Senate election was held on November 3, 1998. Voters elected members of the Arizona Senate in all 30 of the state's legislative districts to serve a two-year term. Primary elections were held on September 8, 1998. Prior to the elections, the Republicans held a majority of 18 seats over the Democrats' 12 seats. Following the election, Republicans maintained control of the chamber with 16 Republicans to 14 Democrats, a net gain of two seats for Democrats. The newly elected senators served in the 44th Arizona State Legislature. ''Phoenix New Times'' is a free digital and print media company based in Phoenix, Arizona. ''Phoenix'' ''New Times'' publishes daily online coverage of local news, restaurants, music, arts, cannabis, as well as longform narrative journalism. A weekly print issue circulates every Thursday. The company has been owned by Voice Media Group since January 2013, when a group of senior executives bought out the founding owners. Matt Hennie was named editor-in-chief of ''Phoenix New Times'' in 2022. John Huppenthal
John Huppenthal (born March 3, 1954) is an American politician who served as Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction from 2011 to 2015. Prior to being elected Superintendent, Huppenthal served as City Councilman, State Representative, and State Senator. Huppenthal was also a Senior Planning Analyst for Salt River Project. Personal life Huppenthal was born in Michigan City, Indiana and moved with his family to Arizona during childhood. He graduated from Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Northern Arizona University. He then obtained a Master of Business Administration from Arizona State University. Arizona's 6th legislative district is one of 30 in the state, consisting of all of Apache County and sections of Coconino County, Gila County, Graham County, Arizona, Graham County, Mohave County, Navajo County, and Pinal County. Herb Guenther
Herb Guenther (April 9, 1941 – December 17, 2021) was an American politician who was a member of both the Arizona House of Representatives and the Arizona State Senate The Arizona State Senate is part of the Arizona Legislature, the state legislature (United States), state legislature of the US state of Arizona. The Senate consists of 30 members each representing an average of 219,859 constituents (2009 figure .... He served in the House from January 1987 until January 1993. He was first elected to the House in November 1986, representing District 5, and was re-elected in 1990 and 1992. In 1998 he ran for the Arizona Senate, and was elected, representing District 5. He won re-election to the Senate in 2000, but did not run for re-election in 2002. He died on December 17, 2021, at the age of 80. John Wettaw
John F. Wettaw (April 17, 1939 – December 16, 2018) was a chemistry professor at Northern Arizona University and an Arizona politician. Biography Wettaw was born in St. Louis, Missouri and graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a B.A. in chemistry in 1961 and obtained his Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 1967 from Michigan State University. Wettaw taught chemistry for 47 years at NAU's department of chemistry, while simultaneously serving 28 years in the Arizona Legislature. He holds the record for the most consecutive years served in the Arizona legislature by a Republican. Wettaw lived in Flagstaff, Arizona. Ken Bennett
Kenneth Roy Bennett (born August 1, 1959) is an American politician. A member of the Republican Party, he was a member of the Arizona Senate from 2023 to 2025. He previously was a member of the state Senate from 1999 to 2007, and president of the state Senate from 2003 to 2007. He was Secretary of State of Arizona from 2009 to 2015. He unsuccessfully ran for governor of Arizona in the 2014 and 2018 elections. Early life Ken Bennett was born in Tucson, Arizona. His parents moved to Prescott shortly thereafter, where he was raised and later graduated from Prescott High School. Upon graduation, Bennett served a two-year mission in southern Japan, and remains an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
