1997 Walker Cup
The 1997 Walker Cup, the 36th Walker Cup Match, was played on August 9 and 10, 1997, at Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, New York. The event was won by the United States 18 to 6. Format The format for play on Saturday and Sunday was the same. There were four matches of foursomes in the morning and eight singles matches in the afternoon. In all, 24 matches were played. Each of the 24 matches is worth one point in the larger team competition. If a match is all square after the 18th hole extra holes are not played. Rather, each side earns ½ a point toward their team total. The team that accumulates at least 12½ points wins the competition. If the two teams are tied, the previous winner retains the trophy. Quaker Ridge Golf Club
Quaker Ridge Golf Club is a private golf club in Scarsdale, New York, that contains the Quaker Ridge Golf Course. Additionally, club grounds encompass numerous tennis courts, a swimming pool, a clubhouse and many other structures along the property. History The club was formed in 1916 by a group of businessmen who had acquired the land a year earlier from a smaller, financially strained club. Renowned golf course designer A. W. Tillinghast was brought in to redesign the seven existing holes and construct 11 new ones. The course was completed in 1918 and the Tudor-styled clubhouse was built in 1923. In 1925, the purchase of additional property prompted the club to recommission Tillinghast to incorporate the new land into the existing course. Keith Nolan (golfer)
Keith Nolan (born 11 January 1973) is an Irish professional golfer. Nolan has been a member of the PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour. Nolan was born in Bray, Ireland. He attended East Tennessee State University (ETSU) in the United States on a golf scholarship, where he studied Communications and was awarded All-American honors. He had a successful amateur golf career which included winning both the Irish matchplay and strokeplay championships and representing Great Britain and Ireland in the 1997 Walker Cup. He also represented Ireland at the 1997 European Amateur Team Championship on home soil at Portmarnock Golf Club, where he won the 36-hole stroke-play competition individually. Gary Wolstenholme
Gary P. Wolstenholme MBE (born 21 August 1960) is an English professional golfer, known for his long amateur career, who now plays on the European Senior Tour. Wolstenholme was born in Egham, Surrey. His father was Guy Wolstenholme a professional golfer. He has won The Amateur Championship twice (1991, 2003) as well as many other amateur tournaments around the world. He has played on six Walker Cup teams and is the all-time points leader for the Great Britain and Ireland side. In September 2008, at the age of 48, Wolstenholme turned professional in anticipation of playing senior professional golf in 2010. He attempted to qualify for the European Tour through qualifying school, but failed to advance past the first stage. Craig Robert Watson (born 1966) is Scottish amateur golfer. He won the 1997 Amateur Championship and was in the British Walker Cup team that year. Justin Peter Rose, (born 30 July 1980) is an English professional golfer who plays most of his golf on the PGA Tour, while keeping his membership on the European Tour. He won his first major championship at the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club, becoming the first English player to win a major since Nick Faldo in 1996 and the first to win the U.S. Open since Tony Jacklin in 1970.
