1997 Maccabiah Games
The 15th Maccabiah Games are primarily remembered for being marred by a Maccabiah bridge collapse, bridge collapse that killed several participants. The Maccabiah had more than 5,000 athletes from 33 countries competing in 36 sports. New sports for the Games included beach volleyball, ice hockey, and taekwondo. Olia Berger
Olia Berger (born June 30, 1980) is a female judoka from Canada. Her father is judoka Mark Berger (judoka), Mark Berger, who was an Olympic medalist for Canada in 1984. Berger, who is Jewish, earned a bronze medal for Canada in judo in the O72 at the 1997 Maccabiah Games in Tel Aviv, Israel. In 1999, she won the Pan American Under-17 Championship in judo in the O70. She won the bronze medal in the women's heavyweight division (+ 78 kg) at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, alongside Ecuador's Carmen Chalá. She came in fifth at the Judo World Cup Prague in 2005. In 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2007, and 2008, she won the Canadian Championships in the O78. Ariel Ze'evi
Ariel "Arik" Ze'evi (; born 16 January 1977) is an Israeli retired dan 6 black belt in judo. He had a long and successful career competing in half-heavyweight judo competitions. He won an Olympic bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in the men's 100 kg judo competition. Biography Ze'evi is Jewish, and was born and raised in Bnei Brak, Israel, a predominantly Orthodox Jewish city in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. While growing up, he trained in the local judo club in his neighborhood, together with his older brother, Roni, who was also the club's first local gold medal pioneer after having finished first in the national Israeli Judo Championships. Ze'evi, heavily influenced by his brother and his accomplishment, began training intensively, and at the age of 15 won his first national competition in the adult class, becoming the country's youngest champion ever. Daniela Krukower
Daniela Yael Krukower (; born 6 January 1975 in Colegiales, Buenos Aires) is a former judoka from Argentina. Biography Krukower was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to a Jewish family, and at an early age moved with her family to Israel where Daniela was introduced to judo. In the mid 90s Israel judo had two promising female judoka, Einat Yaron and Daniela, both competing in the 63 kg category. The two girls were more rivals than they were friends. Daniela thought Yaron was favoured by the Israel Judo Association and since the International Judo Federation limits each country to one participant in each category at the Olympic Games she decided to represent her birth country Argentina. Mark Berger (born January 3, 1954) is a Ukrainian-born Canadian judoka. He won the gold medal in the men's heavyweight judo event at the 1983 Pan American Games and a bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Stuart Krohn (born November 9, 1962) is an American former professional rugby union player. At the University of California, Santa Barbara, he was an All-American in 1986. In Hong Kong, he played for Valley RFC for eight years, as the team won eight consecutive championships, and captained the international team at the 1993 Rugby World Cup Sevens and the 1997 Rugby World Cup Sevens.
