The 1997 European Tour, titled as the 1997 PGA European Tour, was the 26th season of the European Tour, the main professional golf tour in Europe since its inaugural season in 1972. Changes for 1997 There were several changes from the previous season, with the addition of the South African Open (golf), South African Open, which replaced the FNB Players Championship, and the loss of the Catalan Open, the Austrian Open (golf), Austrian Open and the Scottish Open (golf), Scottish Open, which was effectively superseded by the Loch Lomond World Invitational. Bernhard Langer
Bernhard Langer (; born 27 August 1957) is a German professional golfer. He is a two-time Masters champion and was one of the world's leading golfers throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1986, he became the sport's first number one ranked player following the creation of the Sony Ranking (now the Official World Golf Ranking). The PGA Tour of Australasia, currently titled as the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia for sponsorship reasons, is a professional golf tour for men, owned and operated by the PGA of Australia. Moroccan Open
The Moroccan Open was a professional golf tournament on the European Tour which was first held in 1987. Having been cancelled in 1988, it returned to the schedule in 1992 and was held annually until 2001. This was the second European Tour event in North Africa after the Tunisian Open, but the tour eventually left North Africa to focus its global expansion on the established golf markets of South Africa and Australasia and the major growth region of Asia. Richard Green (golfer)
Richard George Green (born 19 February 1971) is an Australian professional golfer. Early life Green was born in Williamstown, Melbourne, Victoria. Professional career In 1992, Green turned professional and joined the PGA Tour of Australasia the same year. He has been a member of the European Tour since 1996, with his first win coming at the 1997 Dubai Desert Classic. His consistent performances in 2004 took him to a career best European Tour Order of Merit finish of 17th. That same year he won the MasterCard Masters and also topped the PGA Tour of Australasia's Order of Merit. In 2007 he won his second European Tour event at the BA-CA Golf Open in Austria. Green previously held a share of the course record at Carnoustie with a 64, achieved in the final round of the 2007 Open Championship. Dubai Desert Classic
The Dubai Desert Classic is a European Tour golf tournament held on Majlis course at Emirates Golf Club in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. In 1999 and 2000 it was held at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, all other editions have been held at Emirates Golf Club. History When founded in 1989, it was the first European Tour event to be staged in the Arabian Peninsula, but is currently one of six. The tournament is part of a wider strategy, via a government program called "Dubai Golf", to develop both professional and casual golf tourism in Dubai. Alfred Dunhill South African PGA Championship
The South African PGA Championship is one of the most prestigious golf tournaments on the Sunshine Tour. It has most recently been played in September, with a prize fund of . It is currently held at St Francis Links in St Francis Bay. History The current South African PGA Championship was founded in 1965, largely thanks to Gary Player and Brian Henning. The inaugural event was held in February 1965 and was won by Harold Henning who beat Player by 3 strokes. Nicholas Raymond Leige Price (born 28 January 1957) is a Zimbabwean former professional golfer who has won three major championships in his career: the PGA Championship twice (in 1992 and 1994) and The Open Championship in 1994. Vijay Singh ( ; born 22 February 1963) is a Fijians, Fijian professional golfer. In 1982, Singh turned professional and played on the local Asia Golf Circuit. However, his early career met with controversy, as he was accused of numerous rules violations, and he was banned from the AGC. Singh turned to Africa and Europe where he had much success on the respective tours, the Safari Circuit and European Tour, winning several times on each. Miguel Ángel Martín (born 2 May 1962) is a Spanish professional golfer. Professional career Martín was born in Huelva. He started out as a caddie and turned professional in 1981. He has been a member of the European Tour for more than twenty seasons, and in 2005 he became the first Continental European golfer to make 500 appearances on the tour. Heineken Classic
The Heineken Classic was a men's professional golf tournament played in Australia from 1990 to 2005 as part of the PGA Tour of Australasia. From 1990 to 1992 it was called the Vines Classic. It was held at The Vines Resort & Country Club in Western Australia from 1990 to 2001 and moved to the Royal Melbourne Golf Club from 2002 to 2005. From 1996 onwards it was co-sanctioned by the European Tour. In 2005 it was the most lucrative golf tournament in Australasia, but the 2006 event was cancelled after the sponsor withdrew and the promoters were unable to find a replacement.
