The 1997 Croatia Open Umag was a men's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts in Umag, Croatia that was part of the World Series of the 1997 ATP Tour. It was the eighth edition of the tournament and was held from 21 July until 27 July 1997. Third-seeded Félix Mantilla won the singles title. Finals Singles Félix Mantilla defeated Sergi Bruguera, 6–3, 7–5 *It was Mantilla's 3rd title of the year and the 4th of his career. Umag (; it, Umago) is a coastal town in Istria, Croatia. Geography It is the westernmost town of Croatia, and it includes Bašanija, the westernmost point of Croatia. Population Umag has a population of 7,281, with a total municipal population of 13,467 (2011 census). Like many other towns in Istria, Umag has a multi-ethnic population. Davide Sanguinetti (; born 25 August 1972) is an Italian former professional male tennis player. Personal life Born in Viareggio in Tuscany, he attended the Harry Hopman academy in Florida and then UCLA. He now resides in Monte Carlo. Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Sergi Bruguera
Sergi Bruguera i Torner (; born 16 January 1971) is a former professional tennis player from Spain. He won consecutive men's singles titles at the French Open in 1993 and 1994, a silver medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in men's singles and reached a career-high ranking of No. 3 in August 1994. Bruguera is the only player to have a winning record against both Roger Federer and Pete Sampras. He won three of his five matches against Sampras: Bruguera leads 1–0 on hard court, 2–1 on clay, and Sampras leads 1–0 on carpet. In their only match, at the 2000 Barcelona Open, Bruguera defeated Federer 6–1, 6–1. By number of games won, the match remains Federer's worst loss in his entire career. Dominik Hrbatý (; born 4 January 1978) is a Slovakian former professional tennis player. Hrbatý reached the semifinals of the 1999 French Open, and achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 12 in October 2005.
