The 1996–97 Vyshcha Liha season was the 6th since its establishment. FC Dynamo Kyiv were the defending champions. Preseason changes Number of teams in the league was reduced from 18 to 16. Vyshcha Liha became a member of the newly established Professional Football League of Ukraine. Oleksandr Kuzmuk
Oleksandr Ivanovych Kuzmuk (; born 17 April 1954) is a Ukrainian politician and military commander, who was a member of the Party of Regions and also served as Minister of Defence of Ukraine on two occasions, from 1996 to 2001 and from 2004 to 2005. Kuzmuk formerly commanded the National Guard of Ukraine (1995–1996) and holds the highest rank in the Ukrainian military, General of the Army of Ukraine (1998). Valeriy Ivanovych Yaremchenko (; born 15 August 1947) is a Ukrainian former football manager and player. Career Yaremchenko was born in the city of Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine. As a player, he participated in 247 games as a member of Shakhtar Donetsk scoring 24 goals. Yozhef Yozhefovich Sabo (; ; born 29 February 1940) is a Ukrainian former football player and manager. Club career Sabo began to play in 1954 for a team of Uzhhorod bread factory and his first coach was Zoltan Gyorfi (). Later until August 1957 he played as a forward for Khimik Kalush in competitions among KFK of the Ukrainian SSR. From September 1957 to May 1959 Sabo played in Class B (second tier) for Spartak Uzhhorod. Sabo made his name as a player at Dynamo Kyiv, appearing at the club from June 1959 to 1969. A four-time Soviet Top League champion, Sabo appeared in 317 games in the competition, scoring 51 goals. His first game he played in a friendly against Tottenham Hotspur on 1 June 1959. In July 1963 Sabo was disqualified for a year for a rough play, but in February 1964 it was changed to a conditional disqualification. FC Nyva Ternopil (; ) is a Ukrainian football club from the city of Ternopil, the administrative center of Ternopil Oblast. As of the 2020–21 season, it played in the Ukrainian First League, the second tier of Ukrainian football, following promotion from the 2019–20 Ukrainian Second League. FC Torpedo Zaporizhzhia is a former professional football team based in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. Football Club Arsenal Kyiv () is a Ukrainian Association football, football club based in Kyiv. In 2019, the club's professional team was dissolved, but its junior teams continue to compete in city competitions.
