1996–97 National First Division
The 1996–97 National First Division was the 1st season of National First Division, the second tier of South African Association football, soccer since the reorganisation in 1996. It consisted of 76 clubs in four streams; Northern, Southern, Western Cape and Natal/Eastern Cape, with the winners being Black Leopards F.C., Black Leopards, (Northern), Tembisa Classic F.C., Tembisa Classic (Southern), Santos F.C. (South Africa), Santos (Western Cape) and African Wanderers F.C., African Wanderers (Natal/Eastern Cape) respectively. At the end of the season, the division was reduced to two stream of 20 teams each. Battswood AFC is a South African football (soccer) club based in Cape Town that as of 2023 plays in the Cape District Football Association Super League. History The teachers and students of the Battswood Training College formed the Battswood Football Club in 1929. Initially called the "Battswood Collegians", the club joined the newly established Cape District Football Association as one of its founder member clubs. In 1959, the club gained eleven trophies, and in 1964 the club won the prestigious Maggot Trophy competition, the highest knockout competition in the Western Province. In 1965, the club lost in the self-same competition in the semi-finals, against the eventual winners, after three replays. Thembisa, formerly Tembisa, is a large township situated to the north of Kempton Park on the East Rand, Gauteng, South Africa. It was established in 1957 when black people were resettled from Alexandra and other areas in Edenvale, Kempton Park, Midrand and Germiston.
