The 1996 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team represented the University of Notre Dame as an independent during the 1996 NCAA Division I-A football season. Led by Lou Holtz in his 11th and final season as head coach, the Fighting Irish compiled a record of 8–3. The team played home games at Notre Dame Stadium in Notre Dame, Indiana. Notre Dame participated in the Emerald Isle Classic, billed as the ''Shamrock Classic'' that year. Lou Holtz
Louis Leo Holtz (born January 6, 1937) is an American former college football coach and television analyst. He served as the head football coach at the College of William & Mary (1969–1971), North Carolina State University (1972–1975), the New York Jets (1976), the University of Arkansas (1977–1983), the University of Minnesota (1984–1985), the University of Notre Dame (1986–1996), and the University of South Carolina (1999–2004), compiling a career college head coaching record of 249–132–7. Holtz's 1988 Notre Dame team went 12–0 with a victory in the Fiesta Bowl and was the consensus national champion. Holtz is the only college football coach to lead six different programs to bowl games and the only coach to guide four different programs to the final top 15 rankings. Led by Jim Colletto in his sixth and final season as head coach, the Boilermakers compiled an overall record of 3–8 with a mark of 2–6 in conference play, placing eighth in the Big Ten. Purdue played home games at Ross–Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Indiana. Purdue started the season 0–3, averaging under seven points per game.
