1996 Missouri Attorney General Election
The 1996 Missouri Attorney General election was held on 5 November 1996 in order to elect the Missouri Attorney General, attorney general of Missouri. Democratic Party (United States), Democratic nominee and incumbent attorney general Jay Nixon defeated Republican Party (United States), Republican nominee Mark J. Bredemeier and Constitution Party (United States), U.S. Taxpayers nominee Kimberly Lowe. General election On election day, 5 November 1996, Democratic Party (United States), Democratic nominee Jay Nixon won re-election by a margin of 475,129 votes against his foremost opponent Republican Party (United States), Republican nominee Mark J. Bredemeier, thereby retaining Democratic control over the office of attorney general. Nixon was sworn in for his second term on 13 January 1997. Jay Nixon
Jeremiah Wilson "Jay" Nixon (born February 13, 1956) is an American lawyer and politician who served as the List of governors of Missouri, 55th governor of Missouri from 2009 to 2017. A member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party, he previously served as the List of Attorneys General of Missouri, 40th Missouri Attorney General from 1993 to 2009 and as a Missouri State Senate, Missouri state senator from 1987 to 1993. Missouri Attorney General
The Office of the Missouri Attorney General was created in 1806 when Missouri was part of the Louisiana Territory. Missouri's first Constitution in 1820 provided for an appointed attorney general, but since the 1865 Constitution, the Attorney General has been elected. As of January 2023, there have been 44 attorneys general in Missouri. By law, the attorney general is a member of the Board of Fund Commissioners, the Board of Public Buildings, the Governor's Committee on Interstate Cooperation, the Missouri Highway Reciprocity Commission and the Missouri Housing Development Commission. 1996 Missouri Gubernatorial Election
The 1996 Missouri gubernatorial election was held on November 5, 1996, and resulted in a victory for the Democratic nominee, incumbent Governor Mel Carnahan, over the Republican candidate, State Auditor Margaret B. Kelly, and Libertarian J. Mark Oglesby. Governor Carnahan died in a plane crash on October 16, 2000, near the end of this term, and was replaced by Lt. Governor Roger B. Wilson.
