1996 Champion Hurdle
The 1996 Champion Hurdle was a horse race held at Cheltenham Racecourse on Tuesday 12 March 1996. It was the 67th running of the Champion Hurdle. The winner was Wally Sturt's Collier Bay, a six-year-old bay gelding trained in Wiltshire by Jim Old and ridden by Graham Bradley. Collier Bay's victory was a first in the race for jockey, trainer and owner. Collier Bay, had been unsuccessful flat racer, who had become a good handicapper over hurdles before emerging as a potential champion by defeating Danoli in the Irish Champion Hurdle in January. Starting the 9/1 fourth choice in the betting, he won the Champion Hurdle by two and a half lengths from Alderbrook, the 1995 winner who started the 10/11 favourite. Champion Hurdle
The Champion Hurdle is a Grade 1 National Hunt racing, National Hunt Hurdling (horse race), hurdle race in Great Britain which is open to Horse racing, horses aged four years or older. It is run on the Old Course at Cheltenham Racecourse, Cheltenham over a distance of about 2 miles and ½ furlong (2 miles and 87 yards or ), with eight hurdles to be jumped. The most prestigious hurdling event in the British calendar, its list of winners features many of the most highly acclaimed hurdlers in the sport's history. The Champion Hurdle is scheduled to take place each year on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival in March and is the last leg of the Triple Crown of Hurdling. Charlie Swan (horse Trainer)
Charlie Swan (born 20 January 1968) is a former top National Hunt jockey in Ireland in the 1990s. He is associated with the great Istabraq, on whom he won three Champion Hurdles. He was twice top jockey at the Cheltenham Festival and was champion National Hunt jockey in Ireland for nine consecutive years. After retiring as a jockey he spent several years a trainer, based in Modreeny near Cloughjordan, County Tipperary. First and only son to Donald Swan, a former British Army Captain, and his wife Teresa, Charlie was named after an ancestor who was the surgeon to the British King 'Bonnie Prince Charlie'. He rode his first winner as a fifteen-year-old, on his father’s Final Assault, in a two-year-old maiden at Naas in March 1983, and, after a successful spell as an apprentice, he later turned his attention to the National Hunt scene. Peter Niven
Peter Niven (b. 7 Aug 1964) is a retired British jump jockey in National Hunt racing. In May 2001 he became the first Scotsman and sixth jockey to ride over 1,000 winners, eventually retiring in September that year with 1002 winners. At the time of his retirement he was the only jockey to have won five races in a day on four occasions. He is now a racehorse trainer. Racing career Niven won his first race at Sedgefield in 1984 on a horse called Loch Brandy. After struggling for a few years to make his way in the sport, he teamed up with Mary Reveley at her Saltburn stables in Clevelend soon forging a formidable partnership. Venetia Williams
Venetia Williams (born 10 May 1960) is an English racehorse trainer specialising in National Hunt racing. She is based at stables at Aramstone in Herefordshire, England. She won the Hennessy Gold Cup and King George VI Chase with Teeton Mill in 1998, and went on to win the 2009 Grand National with 100-1 outsider Mon Mome. Life and career Williams was born 10 May 1960, at Scorrier House, Cornwall. She started as an amateur National Hunt jockey, she rode in the Grand National in 1988 and fell at Bechers Brook, and another fall 2 weeks later at Worcester Racecourse, she was forced to retire after sustaining a broken neck. She worked for racehorse trainers Martin Pipe and John Edwards, before herself taking up a licence to train in 1995. In 2009, she won the Grand National with 100-1 outsider Mon Mome. Richard Johnson (jockey)
Richard Johnson (born 21 July 1977) is a retired England, English National Hunt jockey. Johnson is the second most prolific winner in the history of National Hunt Racing behind Tony McCoy, Sir Anthony McCoy, a long-time rival of Johnson's, with over 3500 winners. Richard Dunwoody previously held the record with 1874. Johnson holds the record for the most appearances in the Grand National and also the record for the most rides in the race without a victory. Johnson has twice won the Cheltenham Gold Cup, on Looks Like Trouble in 2000 and Native River in 2018. Jamie Osborne (jockey)
Jamie Osborne (born James Anthony Osborne 28 August 1967) is a Lambourn-based racehorse trainer and former National Hunt jockey. Jockey Osborne grew up in Yorkshire. His father Tony Osborne was a director of Market Rasen Racecourse and Osborne rode ponies from a young age. He rode for a couple of seasons as an amateur for stables in Yorkshire, his first winner being Fair Bavard for Harry Wharton at Southwell on 29 March 1986. In 1987 he moved south to Nicky Henderson's Lambourn stables and took out a professional licence. In 1989, having completed two seasons as a professional jockey, Osborne was appointed stable jockey to Oliver Sherwood when the latter's brother Simon retired.
