1996 AFL Grand Final
The 1996 AFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the North Melbourne Football Club and the Sydney Swans, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 28 September 1996. It was the 100th annual AFL Grand Final, grand final of the Australian Football League (formerly the Victorian Football League), staged to determine the List of AFL premiers, premiers for the 1996 AFL season. The 1996 AFL season was the 100th season of the Australian Football League (AFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Australia, which was known as the Victorian Football League until 1989. Craig Sholl
Craig Sholl (born 30 December 1967) is a former Australian Rules footballer who played for the North Melbourne Kangaroos during the 1990s. He won a premiership with the club in 1996 and the Syd Barker Medal in 1991, which he drew with Mick Martyn. Sholl played his 200th game for the Kangaroos in the 1998 Grand Final which they lost to the Adelaide Crows. Sholl would once again taste premiership glory in the 1999 Grand Final against Carlton, kicking an early goal and assisting another. Brett Allison
Brett Allison (born 26 May 1968) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the North Melbourne Football Club and the Sydney Swans in the VFL/AFL. He served as the head of development at the Melbourne Football Club from 2013 to 2016. Allison played as a crumbing forward pocket or half-forward flanker and is perhaps best remembered for his Mark of the Year in 1991, as well as being a premiership player in 1996 and 1999. He was known for his ''front and square'' ability to get the ball and sharp shooting around goals. At the end of 1997 Allison was involved in talks that could have had him moving back to Sydney, however this deal fell through and he played his 200th for North in 1998. Darren Crocker
Darren Crocker (born 26 March 1967) is a former Australian rules footballer who is currently the coach of the AFL Women's team. He formerly played for the North Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Playing career Crocker played in the 1996 AFL Grand Final against the Sydney Swans. Coaching career On 16 June 2009, he was appointed caretaker senior coach of the North Melbourne Football Club after the resignation of Dani Laidley. Glenn Freeborn
Glenn Freeborn (born 6 February 1973) is a former Australian rules footballer for both North Melbourne (1995–1998) and Collingwood (1999–2003) in the Australian Football League (AFL). Originally drafted by Melbourne, Freeborn was delisted without playing a game. A durable utility, Freeborn is best known for his three goals in the Kangaroos' 1996 premiership triumph over Sydney. Corey McKernan (born 19 December 1973) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the North Melbourne Kangaroos and Carlton Blues in the Australian Football League (AFL). James Hird
James Albert Hird (born 4 February 1973) is a former professional Australian rules football player and past senior coach of the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Hird played as a midfielder and half-forward, but he was often given free rein by then-Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy to play wherever he thought necessary. Hird was a highly decorated footballer, with accolades including the 1996 Brownlow Medal and membership of the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Andrew Dunkley
Andrew Dunkley (born 29 June 1968) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented in the Australian Football League (AFL). He also represented Victoria in State of Origin in 1998. McClelland Trophy
The McClelland Trophy is an Australian rules football club championship trophy, awarded each year to the club with the best aggregate performance across the Australian Football League (AFL) and AFL Women's (AFLW) seasons. The trophy was inaugurated in 1951. From 1951 to 1990, it was a club championship award presented to the club with the highest aggregate performance across the three grades of competition that were sanctioned by the VFL/AFL – seniors, reserves, and under-19s – with senior wins carrying a higher value. By 1991, three interstate clubs had joined the AFL seniors without competing in the minor grades: after the AFL announced that the under-19s competition was to be shut down at the end of that season, the club championship format was discontinued.
