1995–96 NAHL Season
The 1995–96 NAHL season was the 12th season of the North American Hockey League. The Springfield Jr. Blues won the regular season championship and the Robertson Cup. North American Hockey League
The North American Hockey League (NAHL) is one of the top junior hockey leagues in the United States and is in its 50th season of operation in 2024–25. It is the only Tier II junior league sanctioned by USA Hockey, and acts as an alternative for those who would not or did not make the roster of a team in the Major Junior Canadian Hockey League (CHL) nor Tier I United States Hockey League (USHL). The NAHL is one of the oldest junior hockey leagues in the United States and is headquartered in Addison, Texas. The teams span the United States from Maine in the East to Alaska in the Northwest and to Texas in the South. The teams play a 59-game regular season, usually starting on the 2nd weekend in September and ending near mid-April (2020–21 season is exception, the season started in late 2020-early 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Ice Hockey
Ice hockey (or simply hockey in North America) is a team sport played on ice skates, usually on an Ice rink, ice skating rink with Ice hockey rink, lines and markings specific to the sport. Lakeland Jets
The Lakeland Jets were a Junior A ice hockey team playing in the North American Hockey League. The team was based in Lakeland, Michigan. Soo Indians
The Soo Indians were a Junior ice hockey#Tier II, Junior A ice hockey team playing in the North American Hockey League, North American Hockey League. The team was based in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. History In 1995, the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, Sault Tribe purchased the Lakeland Jets and moved the franchise to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The team was sponsored by the Kewadin Casinos and used as a both a link between the tribe and the local community as well as an advertisement for the casino. The team hired Joe Shawhan to serve as both head coach and GM and the move paid dividens as the team swiftly became a success. Over the course of 10 years, the Indians never had a losing season and twice won their division. Saginaw Gears (NAHL)
The Saginaw Gears were a junior ice hockey team that played in the North American Hockey League. The team played out of the Saginaw Bay Ice Arena in Saginaw, Michigan. History In 1991, the NAHL approved adding an expansion team from Saginaw. The club took the same name as the former IHL team though they use a different color scheme and logo. The team was largely unsuccessful for their first three years, however, the club was finally able to finish with a winning record in 1995 under Dave Westner, who had played for the original Gears. Gaylord Grizzlies
The Gaylord Grizzlies were a junior ice hockey team that played in the North American Hockey League. The team played out of the Otsego County Sportsplex in Gaylord, Michigan. History In the middle of their 5th season, the Saginaw Gears (NAHL), Saginaw Gears were sold and relocated to Gaylord, Michigan, immediately assuming a new identity as the Gaylord Grizzlies. For the team's first full season in their new home, the club brought in Marty Howe, the son of the legendary Gordie Howe, as the Grizzlies head coach. Positive results were infrequent so the club then turned to Brent Jarrett for the following season. The club fell even further in the standings and had average crowds of less than 550 for the season. The team was then sold once more and relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Detroit Compuware Ambassadors (NAHL)
The Detroit Compuware Ambassadors were a Junior A ice hockey team that played in the North American Hockey League. The team was originally based in Oak Park, Michigan, playing out of the Compuware Oak Park Arena but later played at the Compuware Arena in Plymouth, Michigan. History As far back as the mid-1970's, Compuware cofounder Peter Karmanos Jr. had supported youth hockey, labeling his organization 'Ambassadors' for his company. Karmanos began expanding his footprint into the sport in the 1984 when he purchased the Windsor Spitfires, a junior team in the Ontario Hockey League. That same year, he founded a second junior team to take the place of the Detroit Jr. Wings, who had suspended play the year before.
