1995 Citizen Cup
The 1995 Citizen Cup was the defender selection series regatta for the 1995 America's Cup, held in the United States. Three defense syndicates (featuring four IACC yachts) competed over four Round-robin tournament, round robins and a semi-finals series in order earn a berth in the Citizen Cup finals; the winner earned the right to defend the America's Cup against the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup (challenger selection series regatta). The 1995 Citizen Cup featured the first all-female crew aboard Mighty Mary (sailing yacht), ''Mighty Mary'' of the America³, America3 Foundation syndicate, defender of both the Citizen Cup and America's Cup. Citizen Cup
The Citizen Cup is a trophy which was awarded to the winner of a regatta held in 1992 and again in 1995 to decide on a defender of the America's Cup. History The America's Cup Match is always raced between two yachts from different countries. This means that any syndicate from the country of the defending yacht club would not be participating in the challenger series. The yacht club defending the America's Cup staged a series of races to select the yacht to defend and race against the challenger for the America's Cup. For many years a defender series had been a part of the defender selection process and in 1992 Citizen Watch offered the Citizen Cup to be awarded to the winner of the defender selection series. In parallel the challengers competed for the Louis Vuitton Cup and the winner went on to challenge for the America's Cup. Dawn Riley
Dawn Riley (born July 21, 1964) is an American sailor, and a pioneer in the sport of sailboat racing. She is in the National Sailing Hall of Fame and the international America's Cup Hall of Fame and the State of Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. The only person to do this. She sailed in four America's Cups and two Whitbread Round the World races. She was the watch captain on ''Maiden'', the first all-women's entry in the Whitbread race, and was the team captain of the first all-women's team in the America's Cup. She later established the America True Foundation to encourage youth participation in sailing. John Paul Kostecki (born July 7, 1964) is an American competitive sailor of Polish descent. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. John Knox Marshall (born April 9, 1942 in Santiago, Chile) is an American competitive sailor and Olympic medalist. He won a bronze medal in the Dragon class at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, together with Donald Cohan and Charles Horter. Paul Pierre Cayard (born May 19, 1959) is an American yachtsman and professional sailor. He has competed at multiple world championship level sailing events, including the America's Cup, the Whitbread Round the World Race, the Volvo Ocean Race and the Olympic Games.
