The 1994 Newham London Borough Council election to the Newham London Borough Council was held on 5 May 1994. The whole council was up for election. Turnout was 37.2%. Labour maintained its overwhelming majority. Election Result Background A total of 175 candidates stood in the election for the 60 seats being contested across 24 wards. Candidates included a full slate from the Labour Party, whilst the Conservative Party ran 57 candidates whilst the Liberal Democrats ran 30 candidates. Newham London Borough Council is the local authority for the London Borough of Newham. It is a London borough council, one of 32 in the United Kingdom capital of London. The council is unusual in that its executive function is controlled by a directly elected mayor of Newham, currently Rokhsana Fiaz. The council was created by the London Government Act 1963 and replaced four local authorities: East Ham Borough Council, West Ham Borough Council, Barking Borough Council and Woolwich Metropolitan Borough Council. West Ham is an area in East London, located east of Charing Cross in the west of the modern London Borough of Newham. The area, which lies immediately to the north of the River Thames and east of the River Lea, was originally an ancient parish formed to serve parts of the older Manor of Ham, and it later became a County Borough. Plashet is a locality of East Ham in the London Borough of Newham in East London located between West Ham ( Upton Park) and Manor Park. It contains Plashet Jewish Cemetery, Plashet Park, and several places of worship.Willey, Russ. ''Chambers London Gazetter'', p 389-90.
