Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka
The Sabaragamuwa Province (, , ) is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka, provinces of Sri Lanka. Ratnapura is the capital of the province. History The provinces of Sri Lanka were created by the British Empire, British in the 19th century, but did not have any legal status until 1987 when the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka established Provincial councils of Sri Lanka, provincial councils. The province is named after its former indigenous inhabitants, namely the Sabara, an Indic term for hunter-gatherer tribes, a term seldom used in ancient Sri Lanka. The Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka is located in the town of Belihuloya, and was founded in 1991. Geography The province has an area of 4,968 km2 and a population of 1,918,880. Percy Samaraweera
Polwatte Samaraweera Aratchilage Percy Samaraweera (18 March 1923 - 23 March 1999) was a Sri Lankan politician who belonged to the United National Party. He was educated at St John's College Panadura and St. Sylvester's College, St Sylvester's College, Kandy. He was the first Chief Minister of Uva Province in Sri Lanka from 16 September 1988 to 6 June 1998 after which the council was dissolved and elections were held only in 1999. He was elected to the Sri Lankan Parliament in 1965 and 1977 from Welimada Electoral District, Welimada electorate. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena
Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena (born 10 October 1945) is a Sri Lankan politician and land proprietor. He was the Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka from 2020 to 2024. Political career He first entered parliament in 1983 as part of the Hakmana United National Party and has been active in politics for more than 30 years. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena was a young MP when he openly criticised the 1987 Indo-Sri Lanka Accord for establishing a new provincial councils system in Sri Lanka. He along with Chandrakumara Wijeya Gunawardena, the member for Kamburupitiya voted against the bill in Parliament becoming the only two government members who voted against it. He was later removed by the then President J. R. Jayewardene from his Parliamentary seat for violation of the party rules by not voting for the bill. Amarasiri Dodangoda
Amarasiri Dodangoda (18 October 1941 – 30 May 2009) was a Sri Lankan politician, the former Minister of Justice and Law Reforms (2005–2009) and the second Chief Minister of the Southern Province (1993–1994). Early life Dodangoda was born on 18 October 1941 to a businessman William Appuhamy and Punyawathie Goonesekera in Dodangoda, Galle. His had his primary education at Kukulalawatte Junior School, Ginimallegaha, Baddegama and had his tertiary level education both at Baddegama Ratnasara Vidyalaya and Richmond College, Galle. He graduated from the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya in 1963 with a B.A. degree and began his profession as a teacher at Vidyaloka Pirivena, Galle. Then he joined the Government service as an Education Officer in the latter part of the 1960s and this was followed by his entry to Sri Lanka Law College in 1971. Jayatilake Podinilame
H. Jayatilake Podinilame (1947/48 – 28 April 2013) was a Sri Lankan politician who served as the 3rd Chief Minister of Sabaragamuwa. He was appointed in March 1993 succeeding Abeyratne Pilapitiya and was Chief Minister until June 1998. He was succeeded by Kantha Gunatilleke after a period of vacancy. Deva Swaminathan
Deva Manoharan Swaminathan (, ; born 30 April 1945) is a Sri Lankan Tamil lawyer, politician and ex cabinet minister. Early life and family Swaminathan was born on 30 April 1945. He is the son of M. Swaminathan and Lalithambikai (daughter of S. Pararajasingam and grand daughter of P. Arunachalam). He was educated at Royal College, Colombo. After school he joined Ceylon Law College, qualifying as an advocate of the Supreme Court. Career After qualifying Swaminathan started practising law in Colombo, taking over the chambers of proctor Ratnakaram which were renamed D. M. Swaminathan Associates in 1971. Swaminathan was appointed Governor of Western Province in June 1994 after the controversial dismissal of Suppiah Sharvananda by President D. B. Wijetunga. Suppiah Sharvananda
Deshamanya Suppiah Sharvananda (also spelt Suppiah Sarvananda) was the 37th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka and the first Governor of the Western Province. Early life Sharvanda was born on 22 February 1923 in Kayts, Jaffna District. He attended St. Anthony's English School in Kayts before transferring to Jaffna Hindu College at Grade 6. After completing his secondary education he studied at Colombo Law College, qualifying as a lawyer in 1946. During his time at the law college he also obtained a BA degree from the University of London. Legal career As a lawyer Sharvanda worked on civil cases and served under such eminent lawyers as Dr. H. W. Thambiah QC, S. J. V. Chelvanayakam QC, and H. V. Perera QC. He was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in 1974. Abeyratne Bandara Herath Pilapitiya (born 25 May 1925) (known as ''Abeyratne Pilapitiya'') is a former Sri Lankan politician who served as the 3rd Governor of Uva and 2nd Chief Minister of Sabaragamuwa.
